^^ There's certainly a risk of that, although 'ownership' of intellectual property in the form of storage media has always been flakey.  Sooner or later, this sort of thing, DRM and the like will go by the wayside as consumers en masse are gonna say "I'm mad as héll and I'm not gonna take it anymore!"

You may verywell be right, although I really don't see that happening, atleast in our lifetime.

As you noted about the ringtones, I continualy see people willing to pay rediculus prices because they think it's the only option. So much of this stuff if based on populairty and things that are popular stay popular only because their popular.
The Ipod is the perfect example of this. There are many mp3 players that are better than the Ipod, most people just don't know they exist, and many don't want them because their not an Ipod.

For something like this to change it's going to take more than people getting ticked off because their paying $50 for a game, $20 to download the assets, $30 to get the CD key, and $10 per hour to play it. It's going to take them having another option. And then you'll have to convince people that it's a better option and then convince them to acctualy use it.

As for the 'pay-per-play' schemes like this, I think we can accurately fault dumbasses who pay $2.99 for ringtones.

Yeah? Well double dumbass on you. :P
