The specially equipped 7-Series executive cars emit only water vapor when running on hydrogen.

The car hits the market next April and will be shown at the Los Angeles car show in November, the company said. It had said in March the hydrogen cars would arrive within two years.

A spokesman said the car would be leased to selected customers rather than sold because of its high price. Leasing rates would be similar to those for a top-end BMW 760LI with a full-service package.

The BMW 7 Series Hydrogen 7 Saloon is powered by a 260 hp twelve-cylinder engine and accelerates from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.5 seconds. Top speed is limited electronically to 230 km/h.

BMW has said it intends to build a few hundred such cars at first. They will be able to switch between burning standard petrol and hydrogen so that drivers will not be left stranded while the infrastructure to deliver hydrogen is built up.

Sounds pretty cool. Unfortionately, a fully loaded 760 runs 80k+.

At least its a start.

Well hydrogen probably isn't THAT combustable.  It's not exaclty a complex chain of molecules formed using massive amounts of heat and pressure.

What it didn't say was how fast a full tank of hydrogen would burn.  IE Fuel Efficiency.

Hydrogen turning into water generate a lot of power... Maybe not as much as gaz, but it should be close.

Hydrogen, when you burn it, make some huge explosion.

It's definatly a step in the right direction. I think it's kind of stupid to only lease them instead of actually putting them out on the market though.

Also...9.5 seconds for 0-100k?
That's about 6.6 seconds too slow for a BMW.

you'd be surprised how many new cars on the road are 'leased' nowadays.  especially high end cars like BMWs.  it makes it easier for people to buy them, because not many lenders want to give financing on an $80k "investment" thats going to lose half its value in the first two years (heh)thats not much of an investment from a lenders POV.  a lease lets people take the car home with smaller monthly payments, and less risk on the lender.  that doesn't necessarily mean they're not being offered to the open market. it actually just makes it easier for people to buy (so you'll see more of them in a driveway near you, not less)

The BMW K1200R (and, to a lesser extent, the K1200S)
0-60mph - 2.6s
I always thought cars were too slow :p

And yeah, I never really thought about that Cobalt. My mom actually just "bought" a new Mazda3, and we're actually leasing it for two years, using the leasing plan as a kind of "quasi-financing" for the 0% interest rate. So what your saying does make sense.
