A senior congressional source said it is believed the plotters planned to mix a British sports drink with a gel-like substance to make an explosive that they would possibly trigger with an MP3 player or cell phone.

The sports drink could be combined with a peroxide-based paste to form a potent "explosive cocktail," if properly done, said a U.S. counterterrorism official.

"There are strong reasons to believe the materials in a beverage like that could have been part of the formula," the official said.

Authorities immediately banned all passengers headed to or departing from U.S. airports from carrying any liquid in their carry-ons. The massive lines that resulted at security checkpoints made chaos of air travel worldwide as flights were delayed or canceled.

Quote
Besides banning liquids, British police are also banning passengers from carrying electronic key fobs, which have the potential to trigger bombs.

:s8:

what teh #### is wrong with humainity?

does it actually make sense to anybody that an airliner could be taken down by a bottle of gatorade and an electronic key-fob ..!?

(thats would be like someone saying if you shake a bottle of pop it will !!put out somebody's eye!! !!EXPLODE AND DESTROY THE PLANE!!)

(..and what? people believe this because anything less would be "unpatriotic"?)

check this guy :

more here:  passengers forced to give up ALL liquids.   including lip-balm.  because they might !!EXPLODE AND DESTROY THE PLANE!! :old8:

http://www.cnn.com/2006/TRAVEL/08/10/terror.passengers.ap/index.html/

Quote
Laura Yeager left four bottles of Gucci and Cartier perfume for the hotel maid before heading to the Atlanta airport for her flight back to Philadelphia. She still had to give up her lip gloss at the security checkpoint.

She just shrugged and tossed it. "It's better to feel safe.

:s6:

Quote
Bill Poland, 61, of Ross was headed to Lake George, New York, with his wife and son. He held up a tube of lip balm and shouted to a security officer who told him he couldn't bring it on the plane with him. He said he recently had a cancerous growth removed from his lip and the anti-bacterial ointment was necessary treatment.

"In an hour or two my lips are going to start burning and turning purple. And I've got five to six hours on a plane without this," he said. "This is not something I'm looking forward to."

Quote
Kathy McMahon, 49, of Mill Valley, California, was frantically helping her daughter stuff sunscreen, makeup, contact lens solution and other liquids into every corner of her half-dozen suitcases to be checked as she headed off to college.

"I think it's ridiculous," McMahon said. "But we'll do it anyway. What are you going to do?"

^^ and therein lies the problem.
people KNOW its ridiculous but they do it anyways, even when it goesa against a doctor's orders.
because anything less would be.. what?  "unpatriotic?" :old8:

==================================================

its insane, to knowingly participate in insanity, and accept it as "normal".

Woudn't it be easier to ban the paste instead?  And exactly how big of an explosion would it be?  Unless it's some kind of C4 it's not going to do anymore then minor injuries.  Heck, I've seen chemistry classrooms with more firepower.

Did you actually look into it to see if what they thought would happen was possible, or just assume it was a lie because TheGovernment™ said it?

Nothing to look into yet.  All we know is
Tube of stuff + British Gatoraid + MP3 Player = Plane Crashes.
Sure there are alot of chemicals that will make a boom, but to do any significant damage on a plane would require said chemical reaction to take place in a confined space allowing pressure to build up faster and do more damage.  And a plastic bottle of gatoraid doesn't have the capacity to handle alot of pressure.  If I filled one of the big liter bottles with gunpowder stuck a fuse on it, and blew it up next to say... a window.  Yeah, I might break the window and warp the surrounding area, but it's more likely the explosion would press against the window, the window would press back, the exploding bottle would then be pushed away from the window.  Bits of deadly plastic shards would spray everywhere but it's unlikey to kill anyone.  The ONLY thing I can think of to use it for is to blow open the lock on the pilot cabin.  But since that requires you to be able to also take the pilots hostage and since it seems they were more interested in bringing down the plane with the explosives remotely it's unlikely they'd be doing that.  So that goes back to blowing a hole in the plane.  Again, it's not practical.  Sure cabin pressure would change drastically, but the plane is alot stronger then an aluminum can.  And you'd need a big hole to do it.  So unless they've got C4 in toothpaste tubes there isn't anything to really worry about.

I don't buy it. Frankly, and I don't mean this as an insult, but the governmental agents/officials/whatever know more about bombs than you do. If it was totally absurd and impossible, this wouldn't be happening. There’s something to it. Now, it may be exaggerated buy the time it filters down through the governmental officials through the media and so forth, but to blindly assume its nothing at all is almost as bad as blindly accepting whatever the government says.

I'm sure they can examine/analize/test a tube of whatever on the spot and not create all the commotion.

I really think they are just going over the top now. I have allways beleived that the goal of terrorism is to instill fear, and well looks like they have done just that, so really maybe they have just won.

Your also forgetting, regardless of the size of explosion, if there is a breach in the body of the plane, you lose air pressure.  You lose pressure quick enough, and people pass out.   At the wrong time, that means the plane crashes.  If it was anywhere near the (fuel-filled) wing when it goes off, the plane could very likely explode.

Just because you don't want to believe that there are people who would do us harm does not mean they do not exist.

======

p.s: gatorade has a lot of the same chemicals as fertilizer.  yeah.  thats right.  FERTILIZER.
and if you're NOT afraid of fertilizer yet.. then.. well..
