the star in the center seems to mark the location of Mount Sinai.   the location where god  'came down from heaven'  to give man his ten commandments. (a metaphor for "first contact" ?)

a religious man might use that as a starting point for a series about    space travel / aliens.

there were a LOT of episodes in the 1966 series which had religious implications, afterall.

and some see the ten commandments as the beginning of 'Law and Order' on earth; the root of civilized society
(the foundation of "civilization")

in that sense,  a map of Mount Sinai would be a fitting logo for a 'united federation of planets', whose mission is to "contact" other planets via visitations "from above".

so to speak.
