This is only on the internet, right?  Not like on my home network... (assuming they ever find out about your home network)

It applies to private home LANs, too.

The RIAA is just trying to save a dying business model. P2P isn't causing the decline in business sales, shitty music is. Artists also aren't losing money because P2P since the majority of their money is made off of touring. There are only a handful of artists that have a decent amount made from CD sales (Rush being one of them).

Also downloading from P2P networks isn't theft, it's infringement, don't let them tell you otherwise. (eg, If I copy a CD from you, you didn't lose anything, therefore I didn't steal).

Help them modify their business model.

First you have to convince them their business model needs modifying.

Personally I don't think the 'business model' is all that bad.  The pricing and content are what suck.  The content on the CDs are crap, and even if it was good, $20 is too much.  If they's stop giving record deals to talentless assclowns and lower CD prices to something more reasonable ($5.00-$10.00), they'd have a shot.

"Personally I don't think the 'business model' is all that bad."

Any business plan that includes threatening, legally assailing, hounding and intimidating the core of its customer base has a poor model in play.

What it really tells us is that they actually have no product to sell.  They are simply trying to glean whatever dollars they can off of what has been created before.

Disney copied characters from the Brothers Grimm and hence began a life-long attempt to own those images and concepts for themselves in perpetuity.  And, they are getting away with it.

If you want to look at the real threats in this world,  it is the assault on ownership of ideas.  Politicians will come and go.  But if some people and/or corporations can gobble up ideas, art, concepts and systems, while renting them out forever,  the advancement of any society will cease.

Protection of such things should guarantee a fair return, not become protected property forever.

But it is.

It is happening now.

There would be no way to enforce shared folders on the LAN.
