I have an IT class, the point of which I truly don't understand, and we have an Excel project where we need to figure out what formulae to put in certain cells to make it do what we want.  So I have two questions.

First, how would I make a maximum value for a cell?  For instance, I know that certain cells, when added together, will give a value higher than 100, but the maximum value I want is 100.  So is there a better way than just "IF(B15>100,100)" or is that it?

Second, I have a chart of letter grade conversions (ie A=100, B=75, C=50, D=25, F=0).  How do I write a function that converts it, instead of a specialized function for each cell?  For instance, I have one cell with A and a blank cell above it and one cell that says C with a blank cell above it.  How do I write one function that addresses both of them, instead of "IF(C17="A",100)" for the former and "IF(E17="C",50)" for the latter?

Also, just a random question about grading: Generally, if there's a sheet that lists four exercises, each followed by that exercise's weight, then the exam, then the weight of the exam, then the bonus, then a blank cell for the final grade, should I assume the bonus applies just to the final exam or to the final grade?

Thanks for all the help.

If you want to have a maximum input value for a cell you'd use validation on the cells and only allow up to 100 to be entered into the cell

If you want the maximum value of a sellection of cells to be a maximum of 100 you go with =IF(sum(A1:A5)>100,100,SUM(A1:A5))

2nd

I use this forumla quite a bit at work

=VLOOKUP(C17,$G$1:$H$6,2,FALSE)

        1        2
        G      H
1     A     100
2     B       75
4     C       50
5     D       25
6     F         0

This forumla compare what is in the refrence cell to a selection of cells and look down the left column until if finds a match* and will return the value in the numbered column
*False stament at the end tells the forumla to look for exact match

If you enter anything in the cell that the forumla is looking up that is not on the list you'll get a #N/A (I know people at work who think that putting a space in a cell means it's blank)
