You should get the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution it has all wheel drive room for kids and a dog and has plenty of horsepower plus the base edition is 29,000. Well it may not have a whole lot of room.

lol, hey Pork, getting a small SUV is fine...just don't get one of those that puts a school bus to shame.

those big SUVs that people always talk about are the ones built on the frame of a 1/2 ton 4x4 truck.
like the old 1970's-era Ford Bronco. or the GM Yukon in the 90's. or the *bling bling* cadillac escalade today.
I would call those "trucks".
I don't know why anyone would need that kind of suspension on a simple passenger vehicle.
(just buy a truck already :p make the leap)
^^ those are the ones that people are talking about when they biscuit eater about "Big SUV's".

but most family SUV's are just  "the new minivan".
most of them are actually more efficiant than than a traditional minivan...
(which give you seating for 7 but power for 3,
so the engine really struggles to move the weight of those 7 people, especially uphill;
a small struggling 2L minivan will burn MORE gas, overall, than a "hemi" hauling the same load of passengers at low RPM)
...so these small SUVs will actually burn less gas than your average minivan (esp. when full of people)

I don't see how "SUV's"  (in general)  have gotten such a bad name,
when the BIG ONES only account for about 10% of the "SUVs" that you actually SEE on the road..
..and the small ones are actually MORE practical than a minivan, or a compact car.

*shrug*

(IMO) the media should direct the same Fear And Loathing towards MiniVans that we now devote to the dreaded SUV.
the enviroment would be better off  :p

Obviously you've not driven through Colorado!

And I'd avoid Mitsubishi anything like the plague, but that's probably just my aversion to overly high insurance costs rearing it's head.

up here the "SUV crowd" all go for the Rav4's and CRV's and Jeep Liberty's. you might see the occaisional Highlander or Envoy.
but anyone who would shell out for a full sized SUV usually opts for an extended cab 4x4 instead. there are a LOT of extended cab 4x4 1/2tons on the road.
(we've got a Dodge 1500 SLT w/ Hemi) :p

If I was in the market for a CUV/small SUV I'd strongly look at at the Honda CRV.  I know 2 people who own them and really like them - room like a (somewhat smaller) SUV, available 4WD, but with a 4-cyl engine, so good gas mileage.  Not sure if it's still the case, but it was originally built on the Civic chassis.

So, if you're only going to be going off-road occasionally, I think it's a good choice.  It's also the only one in that class I've experienced personally :)

My dad has a CRV (a '98, I think), and he swears by it. Honda anything is a good bet, generally.
