aero is the flashy 3d enhanced interface. Without that you'll be on a more windows XPish theme I believe.

15 Gigs is rather excessive. Its bad enough you buy a 160 gig HD, and 16 gigs are already lost to complete nothingness. Then the OS has to take another 15 gigs? FOR WHAT? ANNOYING ICONS AND UPDATE SOFTWARE THAT SIT IN THE TRAY AND WHOSE ONLY PURPOSE IS TO pee-pee YOU OFF? BLINKING AND BEEPING AND TRYING TO SEEM HELPFUL? THEY JUST SIT AND BLINK AND BEEP AND DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TELLING YOU CONTINUOUSLY TO UPDATE EVERY LITTLE PROGRAM ON YOUR COMPUTER BECAUSE MICROSOFT PASSPORT 2.0.0.0.0.4.5 ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH, YOU NEED VERSION 2.0.0.0.0.4.5.1

"Oh, cut the bleeding heart crap, will ya? We've all got our switches, lights, and knobs to deal with, Striker. I mean, down here there are literally hundreds and thousands of blinking, beeping, and flashing lights, blinking and beeping and flashing - they're *flashing* and they're *beeping*. I can't stand it anymore! They're *blinking* and *beeping* and *flashing*! Why doesn't somebody pull the plug!"

Sorry, I just thought it was interesting how similar your rant was to that one.

15GB? Pfft.

I'm a Vista beta tester, I can tell you it only needs 8GB for a full OS install INCLUDING coping i386 to the harddrive and all the debugging stuff.

And Vista will ship on x1 DVD, not two.

And you dont need a 128mb graphics card, just a card that support DX9 and Pixel Shader 2.0. The amount of memory onboard the card only limits what resoloution you can run Glass at. Also a note to any gamers on there, Vista disables Glass and all it's other new UI components when it starts a game so the game runs just as smooth under Vista as it did under XP, honestly I've noticed some things like HL2 run smoother on Vista then on XP.

Also, madman, yeah, they really included 4 extra GB of nothing but blinking systray icons just to [blank] you off.

To be honest I havent tried that, I may have to try that later tonight or tommorow.

Running a windowed game with glass disabled should be just like running it on XP, when Glass is off you just see the standard themeing service that was used on XP. With Glass on, as long as you arent dragging windows all over the place as you play a game you should be ok, then again when I'm just sitting at Windows Vista doing nothing, Vista is using the same percentage of CPU time as XP and while the pagefile usage is doubled you shouldnt notice a decrease but again I havent tested that yet.

Now in order to hit any comments before they are made, yes, by default Vista uses about double the pagefile that XP used out of the box. Like XP, most of these are just services you can disable, I've shut down enough services where I can run Vista (with Glass) and have a smaller footprint then my XP install.

RAM usage varies depending on your specs, if your PC only has 512 mb of RAM, Vista will use less of it so applications can have better access to it, the more RAM you have the more is used, on average I've seen Vista using about as much as my XP install (which as a few extra things like IIS w/ ASP.net and SQL Server 2005 running). Also remember with Vista you can plug in USB Flash Drives (memory keys or whatever you call them) and they can be used just like system ram by Vista, theoreticly if you plug in x4 4GB flash drives, you can have ~20GB of ram usable by the OS.

There are only two things in Vista which require higher end machines, the first is Aero Glass which requires a good video card. As said in my first post, the amount of onboard ram on the card dictates your maximum screen resoloution (while running Glass), so if your monitor supports something like 2000x2000 and you only have a 64mb card, you wont be running Aero Glass at 2000x2000. While DWM (Desktop Windows Manager, a big component of Aero Glass) is shutoff and you're running the standard themeing service that was in XP or just a Win9x/2000 interface, it's just like your 9x/2000/XP machine, your maximum resoloution is dictated by drivers.

The second thing that requires a higher end machine is the new Indexing Service. They've improved it alot over beta and it's ALOT better then it used to be, but basicly the PC would just randomly start indexing my entire harddrive. It isnt a indexing service like in XP, this one runs deep and gets alot of info, thus it's a hog on resources when it runs. But like I said they have improved it throughout beta, but I wouldnt want it running on an 800mhz machine with 256mb ram.

On one more note, rumor is that Beta 2 will go out to us beta testers and attendes of WinHEC (Windows Hardware Engineering Conference, for any Linux lovers here, a few days after WinHEC ends the Linux boys are trying to hold a 'FreedomHEC', needless to say I havent heard a thing about it since they announced it) on Tuesday (05/22). Rumor also is that it will be downloadable to everyone by Sunday (05/28). Again these are rumors and havent been confirmed by anyone in MS, so if you want to throw Vista on a test machine or dual boot it, it should be out to the public soon.

Edit: Holy c**p was that long...
