I havnt played that many games lately. The only games which I have any intrest in are System Shock 2, The decent freespace series, The Sims Series (Inlcuding 1 and 2) and Spore. Asside from that, I figure I could be doing better stuff with my time. Edit: (Sorry for the length of the quote) Quote | ---- Luke's X-Wing approaches the surface of the Death Star.
"Red Five, begin your attack run."
Luke swoops down into the trench. "It'll be just like Beggar's Canyon back ho-"
Turret laser bolts tear his X-Wing apart.

Turret laser bolts miss by inches. He skims along the trench.
A Tie Fighter drops in behind him and blows his ship to ten thousand flaming pieces.

...and misses. The Death Star destroys the rebel base.

I love that part! That is so true when it comes to many movie based games. |

Well, I still play all the time. I just beat TRON 2.0 again last night, and that game's a few years old.
I think games have a longer shelf life than most people do I guess. I still play stuff I got YEARS ago.
I do notice that there seemed to be (according to the article) only so many 'great leaps forward' left to make when it comes to gaming. The failure (yes, failure) of Virtual Reality to move things on to the next plane is still felt today.
To me, there are still many interesting places gaming can go to. Advances in storage, compression, and processor speed (CPU and GPU) will allow some amazing things to be put out there. Imagine a totally immersive experience...you start out as a Starfleet cadet, taking the learning tracts you want, getting a posting somewhere, and all the life management and social choices invovled. Imagine being a Rebel that joined up before the battle of Hoth. Walking around Echo Base, interacting with AI-controlled characters (with more than just a rotation of 5 dialogue choices), and then the Empire attacks, and assuming you make it, following the Rebellion all the way to the formation of the New Republic. I think it'd be amazing. And it'll happen, to some level, someday. And no MMORPG BS to deal with either.
Some of the games put out today just amaze me. The games my kids and grandkids play? I can't even imagine. |
