Scary Stuff Please tell me this is a hoax (I have checked snopes.com and it doesnt say anything). If it isnt, then things are going wrong bad to worse (Although in hindsight* you could see this coming one day) Ok, I know that if something like that happened to anyone who was computer clueful, we could get around it easy (Shutdown the computer by pressing the power button, put the harddrive into another computer running Linux or something and backup the data. I say Linux because if you boot it up on another windows computer, it may infect that one as well.) but this could be devistating to someone who isnt so computer clueful. But one good thing is like most viruses, they still need a vector to get into the computer. In the most cases (eg. here) the vector is a Internet Explorer vulnerability, so if you use firefox, your safe (in theory) Karl

Ya, it wouldn't really be a problem for most enthusiasts. I would just boot up a Linux live CD (like Knoppix) and burn any crucial files to DVD's. Then reformat. I can't actually see anybody paying for this. If your naive enough to not be protected against getting the virus AND not have backups of important files, then it's doubtful you'll have files important enough to pay for.
