I've just gotten the game (I'm getting a nice collection together of all the quake games - yee ha!), loaded it up, and got it running on the following machine (please, no laughing!)

Dell 5150 with:
3.0 G Mobile P4 with HT, 512 K cache, 533 MHz  FSB (133 quad pumped)
1 G ram
80 MB hard drive
nVidia 5200 Go (no, don't laugh!)

Anyway, I can get this game going on the basic settings and running on a halfways decent framerate (30 FPS app.).  Now, two questions:

1)  Does the HT option in the update work for this type of processor? (single core with HT). I've tried it and the machine just freezes, even though every other application that uses HT works fine (and HT is alive and active on the machine)

2)  Just for a giggle, I wanted to try a joystick or controller on the machine (specifically a CH Products Pro USB Throttle - it's got enough switches, hat switches etc to perhaps serve as a good controller for the machine/game).  Can I do this with Q4?

Many thanks for your response(s)

Many thanks - the link for the mouse program is quite informative.  As far as the processor goes though, Quake 4 does not like my processor in terms of HT:  it'll lock up as soon as I try to activate it via the console, or lock up as soon as I try to activate it via the "system->settings:advanced settings" (when I had v1.2 installed) or lock up as soon as I try to access a level when I've enabled the appropriate cvar.  Does this mean that the game simply doesn't believe that there is HT on the processor?

Thanks again for your responses!

Did you check to see what drive build you're using? That could be the problem.

Out side of linking to those pages I really don't have any real advice to offer since I don't have a HT or dual core processor.

Many thanks for your advice, Nologic.  I do appreciate it!  I know that this sounds like a stupid question but......How do I check the drive build?

doh...spelling error...."driver build"

Okay this may very depending on build...but with mine and probably yours as well do the following:
Right Click your desktop, and a context menu should appear.
From the context menu select "Properties"
The "Display Properties" window should now be visible
Click on the "Settings" tab to the far right side
With the "Settings" tab active there is a button in the lower right with the text "Advanced" click that button
You should now have another window visible that has a tab with some thing like "GeForce ????"
Now click the "GeForce ????" tab
Once that tab is active down towards the bottom of the window you should see some thing like "ForceWare version:   ??.??"
The ??.?? should be your driver build...like mine happens to be 81.98

Ah, we are looking at the video card....I updated the driver t0 67.66 (laptopvideo2go.com indicated that it was the fastest one along with the modified inf file).  So, it could be that the video driver itself doesn't like the HT enablement if the driver isn't the updated one?  I'll check that out, using your driver build. Many thanks!
