| Quote (George W Carver @ Jan. 11 2006, 7:02 pm) | | So why hasn't the Quake 4 community done anything about it, like make their own patch. I'm sure something can be done. |
Theres limits to what can be done by the community. New DM maps have been created, and there are DM mods that add much requested features + bugfixes (eg q4max / xbm), but us mod makers cannot do things like finish autodownload, or correct sound driver incompatibilities etc. Also, remember how long its taken to get advanced mods in previous games - a lot of work has already gone into mods from the community - eg SABot was released pretty #### quick, as were q4max / xbm (and of course Dom - just over a week after the sdk released). id and raven are working on it - see the new DM maps released, and news of an uber patch to the exe (and 3 minor patches already released). Yes, they dont seem to post on these forums, but did you really expect them to with the volume of posts it could generate if they did? I imagine you'd rather they were busy coding. |

I played the single player campaign through without a problem, & enjoyed it immensely.
The problem most are having are multiplayer related. I have spent some time playing online & can say it needs alot of work. By alot of work I mean bugs that need fixing & not maps, gameplay adjustment.
I enjoy Q4 MP, but I find myself playing less everyday, because the game usually crashes within 30mins of playtime. It's the worst kind of crash as well, the one where it takes your desktop with it forcing you to restart your computer.
I'm with dysfunctional & don't blame Raven soft, but Activision, because they have the final say as to when the game gets released. I'm pretty sure if it was up to Raven, the game would have been released, When It's Done.
My theory is to why the game was released at its current state was do to the fact that Q4 was tied to the launch of the XBOX-360, which probably put alot of pressure on the Raven team to finish at a specific date, that hampered their abaility to release Q4 in a solid state.
I also believe that the sound problems that seems to be on the top of everyone's list has to do with having Creative hands in the honey jar. Meaning they (Creative) had access to the sound code to implement their API (OpenAL) & of course now if you want positional sound you need a Creative sound card. Admittedly, OpenAL is a great API & really enhances Q4 sound wise, but it should of only been implemented once the default sound system was clean & without problems.
Let's all hope the Super Patch as it's been dubbed, really makes Quake4 the game it should of been out of the box. |
