New Years Resolutions -

2. Lose 1 Stone by the end of Febuary. And 2 Stone by the end of April. 12 Stone FTW/

Pfft. How hard is it to lose stones?  Pick one up, throw it across the road, done and done :p

Yes, I do realize what you're actually talking about, it just looks funny to a North American :)

Thanks for thedescription of the publishing scene in China Jenny.   I was very interested in this back in the early 1990s.

I read some works by Zhang Jie (a woman writer in China who started publishing in the late 1970s and early 1980s) while studying Chinese literature in graduate school.   The "heros" in her works, and in the works of others, changed over the course of the reform period.  It was as if the writers needed to monitor the political winds to figure out what to write.   For example: at first her main protagonists  were people who suffered during the Gang of Four and Cultural Revolution (Scar Literature period).  This was encouraged by the party.  Then they changed to "good" officials who struggled to do good.   Then it was women workers.   Then it was single women trying to make a life on their own.  There may have eventually been some early capitalists.  It seemed that she pushed how the boundaries of what was acceptable but I think she may have just been paying very close attention to what Deng Xiao-ping was saying.

It must be hard work to be a writer in China but it sounds like openess to the west is making it impossible for the party to keep controls on information that gets through.  Interesting.

Thanks,

Pork

PS.  I don't remember if I made any New Year's resloution statistics.  I hope "Remember your New Year's Resolution" wasn't one of the resolutions I made...

I don't know what's worse...that you actually posted this, or that I actually repeated the word 'adhesive' to myself a few times to try to hear what the crap you were talking about.
