First of all the system:

Athlon64 3000+
768 MBRam (DDR1@CL2,5)
IDE HDD
ATi x800XT (the one with 16 pipes) with 5.10 drivers on Windows (ATi is unable to write drivers else I would use an operating system     instead of Windows ;) )
XP compiled for i386, latest BIOS on top of a K8T800 Neo

The thing is: if you come directly into the middle of ctf3 (i hope it is the right one - I mean relativity), I get a massive fps drop off and it doesn't matter with which settings. I even tried configs which looked worse than QW/Q2 and I get the SAME results - 12-20 fps in the middle (with no foreign movement/entities/effects). The majority of other maps (since I didn't test all until today I can't tell if all) run without any problems at the lowest fps values of 45-50 (and that with several players during an excessive RL/plasma shootout).

Dunno what's the issue (leak?), but I would say that fps is in 90% cases the point why people go back to q3/wsw/cs/css/insert your game here. It would be nice if Raven would resource hunger of the game in MP. While I'm pretty sure that the engine is relatively optimized, I'm not sure if today's majority of descent hardware can handle the amount of polys/maps/effects.

Well, Raven, happy 2006. Go back to the pointers and references and make sure that more ppl can play MP ;)

There's already been a few work arounds:

Drach FPS DM maps

Drach FPS CTF Maps

TMP Map pack - Same as FPS DM by Drach

The above are redone map packs that only use ambient light.  Athough there is another alternative with Q4max's Mod.

Q4max

The 0.71 has the vertex lighting setting added (has allot of other features) so just about any map can be run just like the FPS maps.  Anyone running this mod wouldn't have to have the map packs listed above.

The human Eye can see less than 15 frames per second. I don't see the reason for really raising a fuss :p

What you can physically see vs your computer performance are 2 different things.

So obviously your going to be able to tell how well your PC is doing 20 fps vs 63fps in my case.   :D

This depends on a great deal of factors. In movies, your brain is registering a fluent experience because of motion blur.

Game engines don't have this feature (yet), so in order to fool your brain that you're looking at fluent images instead of a fast slide show, the fps has to be higher then the typical movie fps.

Try capping Q3 for example at com_maxfps 20 and tell me you can't see the difference with 125 fps (provided you aren't looking at a still-life, i.e. without moving your mouse). If you don't see a difference there is something wrong with your eyes... :/

That is untrue - the human eye doesn't see anything between the pictures if there are more than 24 pics per second. But that is only true for frames connected via "glue". Start your favorite DVD and press pause in any scene - you will see that that picture is blurred. That's the glue.

That blur comes not by special computing or similar, but due to the fact that one picture on the film is exposed to the light during 1/24 seconds. During that time enough motion is captured by the picture to create that blur effect. That comes because a camera sees everything just the same way as human eye does.

A GPU cannot do it this way (at least doesn't) because every frame is not static. Creation motion blur as you see it in such titles as Need For Speed and other games with all those bells and whistles (while those insert too much of the blur) costs too much computer power.

The other way is to simulate a camera - compute more than one frame per 1/24 and place all of them together into one frame. The problem is: there is no point in hiding those "invisible" frames so the easiest way is not to put all interframes into one, but to calculate and show more than 24 frames per second. A good number is the double number - 48 or 50 frames.

For example animation movies are generated at 48+ frames by a computer and then are downsampled to 24 to go to a film.

That's why having games running at at least 40 frames is good.

The other thing is:
In TQE (The Quake Engine) everything depends on frames - the netcode, the controls etc. Lower framerate = less control = less control over the game = less fun. Well, as for me, ill make sure ill get more RAM into that machine.

God, how much more? All applications we use today did same routines as they had been done in early computer times. God (Allah, Buddah, Tux,  <insert your own religion template>), take back all the hardware and let C64 rain to the developers ;) ). That machine used to be a good X11 server (except that I inserted the x800XT)

Well, I can't wait until those 1GB banks will arrive  :s9:

Not at all sure what the heck this means. I personally dislike MMORPG's. I am addicted to morrowind, however it's not an MMORPG.

If I knew this entire discussion was about my comments, and not actually about the topic I'd have been contributing as well.

I did learn a lot however about the human eye. Actually what I had originally heard in highschool was 10 fps from the human eye, and lights flicker at 20 fps to save the filament, but yet give the apearance of cosntant light. This is why you see lights flicker and nobody else will have seen it.

I wasn't too sure of my facts so I inflated the number to 15. The blur thing is cool though.

Well, I think that my Windows might be very slow. I checked RAM usage and i didn't come over 650 MB allocated RAM space. I don't know on which moon ATi lives, but they aren't able to support their own products under Linux which is my primary system.
I'll have to reformat my system ...

I don't know where you live, but we have 50hz AC power (In USA the frequencies are lower, IIRC). That means that we have 50 times per second a voltage of 0 volts. Because the bulb's cooldown is longer than 1/50 of a second, the light stays constant. The same is with ionisation of gas-based lamps ;)

It's actually AROUND 30 FPS that the human eye can see...

But when come to a single image showed, some fighter pilot can see it in less than 1/300 of a second.
