I've taken a quick search and did not seem to find any information on the source code for Quake4. In the great tradition of Quake the game source pretty much has to be under the GNU license as with pretty much all previous versions of Quake.

I may not have looked in the right place. I'm sure "Quake 4 source released" is not going to make the same headlines as "Quake2 Full Source Released" did in 1999. (I'm pretty sur eit was '99) I'm just curious if anyone knows off the top of there heads where to get the source so that I can immediatly start on multi-player mods. It's gotta be a race to see who makes the next version of FreezeTag. Last time I talked to Mr. Birksack he was stuck on Soldier of Fortune.

Its quite likely that I'll add a freezetag mode to Q4Max. No promises, but... :)

BTW, its not under GPL - it is released under a GPL incompatible license which restricts its use to just Q4 mods (which is fine by me).

I'm not a guru on licenses having not produced any commercial software myself, but quake1, quake2, and quake3 source were all under limited license until the full source was released at which time you were only alowed to make money as long as you did not reuse any of their skins/models/sounds/textures or levels. Basically you had to make a new pak0.pak

Sure, Raven+id may choose to GPL Q4 when its obsolete, but that wont be for a few years yet. If you actually wanted an open-source Q4alike engine, I'd check out Tr3b's work with Q2/Q3 + GLSL shaders.

However the mod source is what matters anyway :)

Q4src = c++.net? Are there any C++ 6.0 versions? I assumed it'd be in any other language except .NET.

Well its not managed C++ or C# or anything like that, its just straight C++, compiled with the MS compiler v7.1.

I believe Kiltron (mean arena / lost marine guy) had a go at making it work in VC6 - he at least got it to compile I think, but dont think it ran bug-free.

VC6's implementation of templates is too buggy for D3 / Q4 really. It compiles with 2k2, 2k3, and 2k5 (including the free 2k5 ee).

You're confused

The Quake games' GAME source code (read: NOT ENGINE) are always released soon after the game's release. The code is not licensed under GPL. QuakeC source out in august 1996, Q2 source out in Dec 1997, and Q3A's was out in Dec 1999.

The GPL release of the ENGINE and GAME (read: NOT ONLY GAME) source happens much later. Quake/Quakeworld's full source came out Dec 1999, Q2's out Dec 2001, and Q3's is out Aug 2005.

As Quake4 was released not too long ago, don't expect seeing any full GPL source code of it anytime soon. Heck, Raven still hasn't released any source under GPL since Hexen II (and they need to rerelease the heretic and hexen source under gpl as well)
