Hi, Quake 4 looks very ugly on 800x600 and High Quality like low quality. My Ati card has 256mb ram but in my config i found only 64mbs...what the ####? Doesn't quake know my ati, or does it prefer nvidias?

Might help if you explain if you did anything to fix the problem. That way people don't post recommendations that you already did. Since you didn't.. I recommend updating your video drivers, as it been said over and over for just about any video problems.

sounds like you just need to go in and set quality levels in the system settings from what i can tell by your post

For a 128MB card, the auto setting is going to set it to low quality, 640x480 and it does see my Nvidia card total memory: com_videoRam "128" If you have a 256MB card, not sure what the auto detect would set it at. I'm guessing Med quality 800x600, with 1 gig of system memory. But if you have 512MB of system ram is going to be hurting at Med Quality since it does take up 430-640MB system ram, SP mode, when I monitored. Surely if it says 64MB video but yet he has 256MB, perhaps he doesn't have the Cat 5.11 ATI drivers, which would prolly help Q4 see his card corretly. But who knows... I was thinking of getting the X850 XTcard myself... thinking about it.

I have a ATI X800XT PE with 256mb video ram and 512MB system ram. Using 5.12 Catalyst. Auto detect --> 640x480 -->low quality. The game looks like hl1 or more worst.

Ya, set it up manually, then go to tweakguides website and get eer tweaked out, will run nice.

Tweaking it... just aims for some better performance and alter's the way it intended to look.

So... is Q4 seeing your card correctly with the Cat 5.12?

Or is it that you don't like the way it looks, low or high?

The game isn't going to look its best without the other shader, which isn't supported by the X800XT, or the X850XT that I want.

Might want to consider another 512MB system ram, for SP mode, to run smoother if you change the quality settings.

Q4 isn't able to see my 256mb card with catalyst 5.12... This must be a Quake 4 bug!! I cannot tweak anything in settings always low quality and 640x480!!!
