While looking through the console commands list for Quake IV I found a couple of console commands that look like they were added to enable joystick support in Quake IV:

in_joystick (or similar - posting this away from my home pc)

JoyLeftStickMove

I set both of these to "1" and tested them ingame.

When these commands are enabled they cause the player to either uncontrollably rotate anticlockwise (JoyLeftStickMove "1") or strafe to the left (JoyLeftStickMove "0").

The interesting thing is that in the ingame menu I could move the cursor around using the joystick, and all the joystick buttons and the hat can be assigned in the control menu.

I understand that the fact that there is any kind of joystick support provided at all probably owes much to the fact that this game was also developed for the Xbox and its gamepad, but would it be possible to add some commands for the PC version to correct this problem? Adding one to disable the right stick might be the easiest way.

The joystick in question is a Saitek Cyborg Evo.

I tried centring the throttle to see if that could be the problem, but I still kept strafing/turning to the left.

I also experimented with the twist axis rudder, but apparently the game recognises this as a Y rather than an X axis.

So it looks as if there's a phantom right stick in the game engine at the moment that reports movement to the left when there is none, because I tested it with a gamepad with a left and right analog stick and still had the same problem.

For those of you wondering what I'd want to use a joystick to play this game for in the first place, Í use it with my left hand and a Logitech MX518 in my right.

I used the stick's configuration software to map w,s,a,d keys to the stick's X and Y axes, and mapped the rest of the buttons to the keys I use most often. Between the MX518 and the Cyborg Evo I hardly need to touch the keyboard at all.

I'm hoping that with Raven's changes to the Doom 3 engine they have added proportional analog joystick movement, so I can increase or decrease my speed by degrees: push it forwards a little bit and I will be able to edge forwards - further still to walk - and all the way forwards to run.

Forget trying to get "native" joystick support with this game, or any new game, for that matter. Gone are the days of true analog joystick movement (faster the farther the stick is pressed). I personally use a CH Fighterstick USB and a Kensington Expert Mouse Pro trackball.
