I get the Splash green screen or gray and then back to the desktop. I have :

Dual Xeon 2.4
1 GB RAM
ATI All-in-wonder Radeon 8500
lot's of drive space
windows 2000 pro

installed on 2 different pc's all have different problems. We shouldn't have to go through all these disableing stuff just to be able to play (if we are lucky that it plays)

very dissapointed. I still play Q3 all the time
does anybody know if something is being done or should I throw it away and forget it.

I've tried everything.  Even deleted the sound drivers and openal32, installed my sb live card from my old PC, tried installing new drivers from creative, and then tried the beta drivers, and I still can't get past the grey splash screen.  Doom3 has the exact same grey screen, but that loads and runs flawlessly.

Is raven even adressing this???  Seems to me everyone with this issue is running AMD 64 3200+ with ATI Radeon.  I think the sound problem that some had is correctable, but this seems to be an entirely different problem.  My PC is only a week old and is updated to the day with all latest drivers.

I'm also enjoying the issue where q4 quits to the desktop.  At first when I attempt to start/load a game Q4 will hang on the loading screen and then return to the menu screen where I will have no sound.  At this time I am able to attempt to load the game again and it will work (and sound is re-initialized).  My game will play to the point in the VERY beginning where you first go through the doors with a marine from Badger Squad.  Right after he kills the very first Strogg you see in the game, a radio broadcast will start and some doors will open.  At this very moment, every time, my game crashes.

I do not have an open AL compatable soundcard.  

I was able to play the quake4 demo without any problems whatsoever.

My system is as follows:
Pentium 4 2.4
Soyo p4x400 Dragon-Lite Motherboard with onboard C-Media sound and onboard LAN
ATI Sapphire x800 GT
1 GB RAM

I get a similar problem.
I guess Quake boots up into 800 x 600 resolution.
My screen only supports a minimum resolution of 1024 x 768.
I can hear sound but the screen reports that the resolution is not supported

How do I change the start up resolution........
Tried editing the config but as yet nothing
