Hmmm the thread started in one way and changed its topic quickly ?! Lets go back back to the original reason for the thread. And that is we want Quake 4 to be something like the old Quake games. Yes personally I do dont care for the story line of Quake 4. I am looking to Quake 4 for geeting an experiance like Quake 4 Arena. And thats why my main interest is the multiplayer part in Quake 4.

And those who are shouting for games like SOF2, they remain happy with their SOF2 like gameplay. Dont come and shout for SOF2 like gameplay in Quake series. Quake is a superfast type gameplay with pure "kill or be-killed" type gameplay. That is why we quake players like the game. Thats why even today I played Quake 3 for about 3 hours. That is why I have played Quake 3 for over 8000 hours ( yes eight thousand + ) . For guys like me, SOF2 and CSS get boring quickly. We like the splattering of gibs. We love rocket launchers and rail guns. And we love Quake for its first and furious gameplay. Let's hope Quake 4 ( specially its multiplayer part ) fulfills our hopes.

I think the hardware that the game is intended to play on, has a LOT to do with the final gameplay.

have you ever played Halo?  Halo is an Xbox game.
the gameplay moves VERY slowly compared to qUAKE3, your character walks like he weighs 2000lbs **

you might think "hey no problem, I'll just use a keyboard/mouse adapter for my Xbox and increase the sensitivity of the mouse so I can 'twitch' my shots like Quake3"...

...but that doesn't work.  why?   because you'd need a fast CPU + GFX card to pull it off,
and the Xbox only has a 733 coppermine + 64MB Geforce3.
as soon as you use a keyboard/mouse adapter on the Xbox you will realise WHY the character's speed and rate of turn is designed to be so slow in console games.
its because the hardware can't handle anything faster.

with a keyboard/ mouse adapter you'll find the Xbox chugs along at about 10 fps, unless,  you move slow enough and don't run around too fast.
if you try any "Quake-like" movements then the game stutters.
and something as quick as a 'rail-gun-twitch' would be lost in the lag.
it would leave you cursing the hardware.
(why do you think keyboard/mouse accessories are not generally available for Xbox?)

again we see, the hardware specifications of a microsoft console being used to dictate "Gameplay" elements in a developer's work.
specifically, the speed of play.

** the developer explains this by stating in the game manual that the 'Master Cheif' , in fact,  DOES weigh 2000lbs (!LOL!) and thats why he has been designed to move so slowly in-game.
(ie : the limitations of the Xbox hardware were explained as part of the "premise" of this wretched game)

------

the fact that Quake4 is designed with the Xbox SDK and is intended to be played on an Xbox will dictate certain aspects of the gamelpay.

including things like, the speed of play.

my discussion of Xbox hardware wasn't intended to de-rail the conversation away from "gameplay" aspects of Quake.
quite the contrary.

the author of the thread referred to "newbified" gameplay (ie:slow, crappy, 'console-style' FPS gameplay),
and I just tried to explain where I think this style of gameplay is actually coming from.

I think it comes from the unfortunate reality that (all?) games for the last 5 years have been designed as 'Xbox games' and not "PCgames", per se.
(this is what I mean, when I say "PC gaming is dead") :p

and this has influenced everything form the speed of play,
to the kinds of weapons that the develoopers are free to design,
to the premise of the game's main character (example:"master cheif")

-------

Quake3 on the other hand was not created to be an Xbox game.
thats why it makes a good PC benchmark.  and thats why it feels so free, to play it.
thats why you can move so fast in-game, and why you can twitch shots with weapons like the "light-gun"
(thats why you love it so much)

^^ (IMO) that has a lot to do with the hardware that the game was written for.

 Quake4 will be... different.
whether that is a good thing or a bad thing remains to be seen.

From what I've been reading, Quake 4 was developed to be a PC game first, and then adjusted for the Xbox 360 gameplay wise. From all the videos I've seen, the action looks at least as fast as the prior Quakes, and that's a good thing. I seriously doubt id or Raven are going to pull a lame one on us because they want to cater to people who play on consoles, when they could make the game for us AND for them. It'll be here soon enough, so we'll see it firsthand, and let's hope they don't pull that lame one.
