Exciting day yesterday.

We had just come off a hiking trail out in North Bend.  As I was walking through the parking lot (which parallels the road) with my dog, I hear a couple of motorcycles screaming down the road off in the distance. I can see them way down the road between some signs and some trees by the parking lot exit.  The parking lot is on left hand turn in the road (from the bikes perspective) so I can see down the road out the parking lot exit.

As they approached the turn the guy in front locked his brakes up, skidded and rose up on his front tire. He was going 100+.  The skid marks are straight and about 100 feet long.  Lucky for him he happened to aim his bike before he locked the brakes up between two signs by the exit with 4x4 posts. Either would have killed him.

Instead, he crashed into a hump of dirt with some 2" thick trees on his. The bike pole vaulted off the front tire up through some trees (he uprooted one).  His bike went through the trees at maybe 15 feet in the air and bounced and slid past me about 10-15 feet away to my right.  He also went sailing and spinning through the trees and landed in the parking lot maybe 15 feet from me and Rufus. The trees probably slowed him down.  A woman who was backing out in her car in the parking lot would have had the bike in her lap had she pulled out 5 seconds earlier. There was an impact from the bike in the pavement right behind her car where it hit on it's second bounce.  Even after the 100 foot skid, hitting the dirt berm, sailing through the trees, it still travelled 50-75 feet.

I froze for a second but immediately started thinking, "What do I do?".  Best I could think was keep him still and talking.  I spent the next 10-15 minutes keeping this guy talking and holding him down till the paramedics got there.  He was half-conscious but only had a few big scratches.  He kept trying to get up.  Once the paramedics got there I had to hold his head still for maybe 30 more minutes while they checked him out.  According to the EMTs, most of his injuries were "soft tissue" so he'll live.. just maybe he'll be a bit smarter.

Lucky bastard.

His friend he was riding with aslo crashed.  I think the second guy clipped him when he locked up. He was OK as well but maybe a busted leg.

Turns out they were running from the cops and one had a gun....  The state police on the scene said that they had flown past a cop earlier and that cop had decided to chase after them.  That's when they fled (and apparently got away - temporarily).

I'm still decompressing from it.

Whew!

Pork

PS. I went out for a beer and some food at a Hawaiian restaurant  real near home.  I needed a bit of relaxing.  It's called The Kona Kitchen because they had a dish called Angies Kalua Pork and one called Moco Loco. Two ham hocks up. Good cheap food.  I had a rib-eye steak for $12.  As a bonus, the owner (and maybe the guy who did the cooking) is Chozen, the young bad guy in Karate Kid II.  You know:

Katate Kid:  I'm not looking for trouble"
Chozen: "Well, maybe trouble looking for you..."

Full day...

It's sure a good thing that you were around to help...not that these guys deserved being helped, considering what they could have done to your community.  Good job!
.

You didn't say - which one had the gun?

The guy who landed in the parking lot had nothing (not even leathers).  The person with the nicer bike had the gun (and 3 clips) in his jacket.

I think they were just punks.  They were 23 and 24... just screwing around I think.  Who knows....

Pork

PS.  No dishonor in Huli Huli Chicken

I thought this was going to lead to you scraping the guys face off the pavement like so much street pizza.hehe. when you said he landed 15 feet from you I thought you were going to tell us he died right in front of you.  that would have shaken you up a LOT more.  sounds like it turned out OK in the end, you got to help the guy out and you've got a nice story to tell    it could have been a lot worse.
