Than I am right now at Paypal.  I know we have all heard horror stories about paypal, but this one takes the cake.  WWW.somethingaeful.com was a site hosted in New Orleans and run by a nice man named Lowtax.  Since New Orleans is now slightly damp, the SA servers are down, and Lowtax uploaded a temporary donations page on the somethingaeful domain.  This link allowed donations to a paypal account to give to the red cross.  The REASON he did this, and not just link to the red cross site himself, was so that he could REWARD THE DONATERS!  He was gonna senc out free merchandise to anyone who donated over $10.  For free. THIS IS A NICE MAN.

It all went horribly wrong.  Paypal FROZE THE ACCOUNT WITH $20,000 dollars in it.  This is $20,000 that the users of Somethingawful.com have raised in SEVEN HOURS.  Thats $3,500 AN HOUR WE WERE RAISING FOR CHARITY, AND PAYPAL SHUT US THE #### DOWN.

As you can tell im a bit pissed.  In summary - Please dont use paypal.

When I read this, knowing it's Paypal, I'm not at all surprised.

Term of phrase. He's just saying paypal stopped donations. 'Us' being he and the rest of the somethingawful community who donated.

I've always hated Paypal, but until something can be done about how Ebay and it are married, it isn't going away...

On the other hand, Lowtax hasn't sent me something I ordered from him way back in june for $12, and hasn't responded to any of my emails, so I don't have much respect for him anyways...

Personally, I'm not a PayPal fan, although I haven't had any direct issues with it myself.  My whole problem with it is they act like a bank - deposits, withdrawals, transfer funds between accounts - but they are not regulated as such.  So, really, if they decide to "suspend" and/or seize your account, your only outside recourse is to sue, which may or may not be useful given you've likely agreed to a variety of terms and conditions most likely letting them do this.

The one thing I do like about them is they make it relatively easy to set up a system for businesses to accept credit card payments (for a fee, of course), which I'm told is something of a hassle otherwise for small/medium sized businesses.  But, if they're going to seize your funds on a whim, not much of an advantage...
