sometimes the game crashes with an error like "GL swap frame buffer" which is odd; it's never happened until recently... my system has encountered few problems before this, and very minor ones too

Any recent changes to the system, you could try to update the video drivers. Are you useing DX-9, you could use the diagnostic utility to check it out.
