Now let me get this straight - I'm a hardcore Q2 fan. I like Q1/QW, Q3 is okay, but they have nothing against Q2 when it comes to PHYSICS.
The main reason why Q2 keeps you hooked for years and years, it's because it makes you practice like crazy. All those strafejumps, doublejumps, circlejumps... You need to master at least some basic trickjumps to become a considerable player. Q3 is boring, because it has only regular strafejumping and weaponjumping. It's hard to explain it to a person who's never played Q2 before why it feels so good to hear those grunting sounds and just FLY in the air up to some platform.
So, if you want to make a good multiplayer game, don't make it after Q3. Instead, go for insanely difficult, crazily messed up world of trickjumping and then the game will really be fun. In Q3 you never see any movement in the game that surprises you, but in Q2, I still to this very day sometimes go "WOW - how the #### did he do THAT?!".
If some of you Raven guys have Q2 installed, I will gladly send you a demo by Polosatiy, probably the best trickjumper in the world when it comes to Q2. I guarantee you can spend one year practicing the same jumps and you won't make half of them. That's what makes a game fun - always something new to learn, some new skill to master.
If you are reluctant to consider adding doublejumping (and maybe even circlejumping) to Quake IV, think of it this way - the people coming from Q3/CS/rookieworld will probably not wish to master them, because it takes practice and it's so friggin hard compared to just running around and strafejumping. BUT, it will make the game so much more fun for people who can appreciate it.
You've got nothing to lose, but so much to add to the game. I hope you take the chance. |

"I disagree q2 is boring. They should keep it like q3."
- What's this, the argument of the century?
"Quake 3 multi with a little more variety."
- Sorry chap, you could not be more wrong. Q3 is all about aim and that's it. Well aim and timing armor. Where's the variety in that? In Q2 you need to spend time polishing your movement, and learning to use every weapon (rocket launcher is slower, takes a lot more practice for example). Also, changing weapons is alot slower, so you can't just blast somebody with the rail, quickly switch to plasmagun to finish him off. And don't even get me started on Q3 teamplay, which is completely pointless "running around and killing everyone" compared to the Q2 (which has the best TDM maps in the universe, q2dm1 and q2dm3). I could explain the issue with more detail, but it's obvious you haven't played Q2 seriously. Maybe you got scared, because you couldn't do the megahealth jump in q2dm1?
"I don't like Quake 2 for the reason that it takes ages to master all those jumps, whereas everyone else already has them down pat and can trickjump from one end of a map to another..."
- That's my message. If you want to create a game which a person with just good aim can master in a short time, stick to Q3 or CS or whatever, but DON'T create another game like that. I miss a game where I have to practice and really put myself to test.
"Are they COMPLETLY FPS "frames per second" indipendant?"
- Unless you're running it on some 2-mbyte S3 card, you should be fine. |
