By Dr. Chmod and DeI2anGeD: Here is a quick how to on setting up a Doom3 server.

Create a batch file and put it in your doom3 directory. I called mine ‘start-server.bat.’ In the file put something like:

############################ cut below ###################################

:start
Doom3.exe +set net_serverdedicated 1 +exec DoomConfig.cfg +servermaprestart +set si_maxPlayers 4
goto start

############################ cut above ##################################

Then go to your base directory and edit the ‘DoomConfig.cfg’. Fine the following lines and modify them to suit your needs.

############################ Example ###################################

seta si_spectators "1"
seta si_usePass "0"
seta si_warmup "0"
seta si_teamDamage "1"
seta si_timeLimit "10"
seta si_fragLimit "10"
seta si_map "game/mp/d3dm1"
seta si_gameType "Deathmatch"
seta si_name "5 Assed Monkey"

########################################################################

Options:
seta si_spectators “1/0” – [on/off] Allow people to join your server to watch the game without playing
seta si_usePass "1/0" – [on/off] turn on password authentication to join server
seta si_warmup "1/0" – [on/off] Allow time for players to join and get ready before the match starts
seta si_teamDamage "1/0" - [on/off] - Available for Team Deathmatch only, this option enables or disables friendly fire between teammates.
seta si_timeLimit "10" – [minutes] - The player who reaches this score first, wins.
seta si_fragLimit "10" – [units] - The player who reaches this score first, wins.
seta si_map "game/mp/MAP" – [map name] – select maps from below
seta si_gameType "GAMETYPE" – [game type] – select from game types below
seta si_name "SERVERNAME" – [server name] – the name of your server

Maps:
d3dm1
d3dm2
d3dm3
d3dm4
d3dm5

Game types:
"Deathmatch" - An every-marine-for-himself slugfest. If you’re the marine with the most kills when time runs out, you win.
"Team DM" - Pair-up and compete to be the team with the most kills before time runs out.
"Last Man" - Each marine has a limited number of lives. If all others have fallen and you’re the last marine standing, you win.
"Tourney" - Two marines battle one-on-one while others watch and wait as spectators. When the battle’s over, the first spectator in line becomes the new opponent while the loser moves to the end of the spectator line. The victor remains in the combat arena until defeated by another marine.

Colored server names:
^0 black
^1 red
^2 green
^3 yellow
^4 blue
^5 cyan
^6 purple
^7 white

so, '^1Doom3 Server' would be 'Doom3 Server'
and '^2ID ^3Software' would be 'ID Software'

Console commands:
serverForceReady - force all players ready
serverInfo - shows server info
serverMapRestart - restart the current game
serverNextMap - change to the next map
gameKick - Kick a player using their name

Know issues:
1. Installation - Doom3 will not install on Windows2003 server. Install Doom3 on Windows 2000 or XP platform and then just copy/ftp the files onto your server.
2. Random crashes – Dooms3 seems to crash randomly. If you setup your batch file like shown above, it will restart automatically.
3. High CPU usage – just sitting idle, the CPU seems to be abnormally high.
4. Player limit – the max players you can do from the GUI and from the config file is 4. You can however increase this count by changing the limit in your startup command line ‘+set si_maxPlayers 16’. Beware that going above 4 makes the server very unstable.
5. server browser - I have noticed that sometimes when I try to connect to my server, the IP it tries to connect to is not the same IP as my server. I suspect that there is something wrong with IDs code in that is might be mixing up the SQL tables
6. password required - it seems to sometimes I get a prompt for a password on my server when I did not set one. Again, mis-matched SQL tables?

Backup Your Work or your Work will be gone.

IMPORTANT NEED TO KNOW INFO ON SERVER SETUP WITH ROUTER

Be sure that your computer is not behind a software or hardware firewall of any kind. This includes firewalls built into routers or other equipment, as well as programs like Zone Alarm, Black Ice, and the integrated firewall in Windows XP. Activision does not support the use of our games from behind a firewall. If it is not possible to disable the firewall you will need to open the ports for Doom 3. Doom 3 transmits and receives network traffic on port 27666 using both TCP and UDP. If you wish to run an internet server you will also need to also open port 27650 for the heartbeat to the id master server.
Servers can specify which port they wish to use for communication. This port will need to be open on your machine to connect to the server. Look in the server information in the lower right hand corner of the screen after you click on a server. At the end of the IP: line you will see a colon followed by a number. This is the port that server is using to communicate. The exact details on opening a port is specific to your firewall. For more information check with the firewall documentation or manufacturer.

Another common cause of problems is a poorly configured router or connection sharing solution. If you are using a router, ICS, NAT or a software gateway you may have problems playing on the internet. This is because the router may not be forwarding the correct information back to your machine. It may be possible to get around this problem using port forwarding or DMZ. You can find more information on configuring shared connections for multiplayer gaming at www.practicallynetworked.com. Please be aware that like a firewall we cannot actively support using shared connections to play online.

The most common cause of problems though is usually the simplest - an overburdened network stack. By default many computers have protocols the average person doesn't use; things like VPN or NDISWAN. You may want to contact your ISP to find out exactly which protocols you can safely remove. Often times network game problems are resolved by something as simple as removing unused adapters and protocols.

The problem may also be related the the status of your ISP or that of the server. Due to the dynamic nature of the internet and the variable levels of traffic, it is impossible to completely eliminate this error. If you are having persistent problems you may wish to try a different server, or just wait and play a little while later

I might fix tonight  I might not

forgot about opening the port... OOPS
