Ok, my brother is downloading things through torrent, using up all the monthly download allowance, and using up all the bandwidth so everything else has slowed to a crawl. I was wondering whether anyone knows of any method I could use to block his pc from the network so he can no longer continue (he's a selfish bugger, asking didn't help  :;): ). I need to do this from my own pc.

I've looked through the router settings but found nothing.

Any ideas guys?  :D

Are you on a router? I have to assume so, so what make and model is it?

Most newer routers have a feature where you can block access to certain PC's during certain times, just hard assign an IP to his PC and lock him down during certain hours.

:p

It's a d-link DI-804. Crappy thing, and so #### simple. It's only got the most basic features.

Whoops, didnt see that part.
:p

Uh, unplug his network cable and say the ISP is having problems or set up a security policy on his machine blocking internet access between certain times (dunno if this can be done on his OS)?

If there's a firewall on your router, you need to open certain ports for BT to function correctly... Otherwise your up/dn speed will be severely limited. (In my case, closed ports = max of 30k down, instead of over 100k when they're open)  So if he has some kind of forwarding setup in the router to his machine, just cancel it, and his speeds will drop dramatically... If he can even connect to the torrents anymore.  Then again, he may be kinda dumb, and might have never opened the ports...

A wireless router should have a MAC address exclusion list, you could try blocking hit...port blocking might be less obvious.

What's he downloading?  If it's illegal stuff, you could tell your parents if (a) they care and (b) you wanna be really mean...  Maybe just threatening him w/ that if he doesn't knock it off...

That, or fake a letter from his ISP.  Hahah.  That got me to stop.

Can you browse onto his machine from yours or is it locked down?  If you can then go to the following location on his machine:  c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc.  In there you'll find a file called hosts.  Edit it in note pad and add the routers IP address followed by local host (just follow the same formatting as the 127.0.0.1 local host line that will be in there).

After that he might have a few problems connecting to the router.....

Failing that, you could check the router to see what security options it has.  Enabling MAC address security, adding your own address but forgetting his should do the job.
