If you know for sure that he isn't gonna want you back the way you want him, the best thing you can do is get rid of everything that reminds you of him, and temporarily change a few daily routines. Might be hard, but it's for the best, and it'll help you get over it quicker. And for god's sake, don't be friends with him, that'll make it twice as bad.

the worst is night time... the darkness and silence, me in my bed with nothing but my thoughts... i cant even sleep.

but I have to agree, from my past, trying to be friends doesn't always work

And if you try to convince him to come back, most likely you'll convince him that he was right to break it off.

It is best to have him come to that conclution himself.
