I gave up on trying to save up money for a laptop and ordered parts to rebuild my PC. Instead of forking out $1500 for a laptop, I ordered PC parts for just over $600. The system will be as follows (more to follow on subsequent paychecks):

AMD Athlon64 3000+ 2.0Ghz (socket 754)
ECS 755-A2 mainboard (hey it was dirt cheap and decent)
512MB DDR-400 RAM
80GB SATA HD
Lite-on 16x DVD+/-RW dual layer DVD burner
Nvidia GeForce 6600GT AGP video card (MSI brand) with VIVO.

I also bought a new power supply to replace my old 230-250 watt power supply. :)

I'm excited. This new system is gonna scream! And Newegg also threw in a free copy of Farcry with my order, so who can complain there.

I'm no longer in the dark ages people! :D

Impressive. How many bucks did you have to hand over in order to get it ??

I didn't think so either, and the free Farcry made it even sweeter.

I may have to go out and get me a copy of HL2. I'll have no trouble with that in a week. :D

However, now my main concern is getting SATA to work under Linux so I can run a dual boot system. I neglected to think that not all Sata controllers are supported under linux, and the SiS964 southbridge (which is the sata controller) may not have support. If I can't get it to work, I'll have to get a normal IDE hard drive to run linux on.

It has drivers both under 2.4 and 2.6.

Just making sure but do those drivers work with the SiS964 southbridge (which houses the SATA controller)? I just need to know if this specific controler will work. I know SATA works in Linux, but I've heard of people having issues with certain controllers.

Congrats, looks like it will be a nice system. :)

Guess you already have a monitor and everything else.
