Or you can give this 3D software a try at Caligari called TrueSpace,
the latest version is 6.6, pretty complexed compared to other 3D modeling programs, but works for me anyway heh, you can try out the demo too if you like! :) (its below the image with the boat)

TrueSpace sounds familiar for some reason, though I can't place why.

I have bought gameSpace (a kind of TrueSpace with only game development-related features: no physics simulation and metaballs for instance) a few months ago and I'm really happy with it, though the interface does need a bit of time to get accustomed with at the beginning (it is completely icon-based!). The documentation could have been better also but it does the job quite well in the end and video courses can be downloaded freely to compensate.

There is a free version available over there: http://www.caligari.com/gamespace which is only limited by the number of polys you can export (around 650 I guess).

Dude, why are you messing with educational versions and free software if you have 3dsMax?! That can do EVERYTHING you want, and much better than any free software...

Stick with that.  Even if it can't do something you want right away, you can always get a plugin to do  it.  And if you start with that, I can help you w/ it.

@Corran:  I never got around to animating anything, so the final thing was just a rotating view that switches from a normal rendered view to a wireframe.  Good for my portfolio, but not very exciting.  I'll try to remember to post a picture somewhere, thought it probably looks like the last picture I posted.  I'm working on another project right now anyway.
