In a press release today, Epic and Atari has announced that Unreal Tournament 2004: Editor's Choice Edition will be released this fall. This new edition provides a wealth of new content in the line of vehicles, maps, models, updates, tools and more. Set for $39.99, this new collection has been especially tailored for a worthy pricetag. If you want to know the (lengthy!) details, changes, and additions just keep reading.

The following is a brief list of what to expect from this release:
  • New maps for Onslaught - many new and never-before-seen maps to be added; many tailored for Windows XP
  • New characters - at least six new characters to choose from, that's two MetalGuard mercenaries, two Mecha Skaarj and two Necris characters
  • Content from the "Make Something Unreal" contest - The best of the best from the mod community for UT2004 has been hand-picked by Epic and chosen to be added as official content boasting new and interesting ways to play
The estimated price seems good for those who never bought the original, however those interested in modding for the community may find it useful for the two-DVD set of the original which includes several video tutorials on how to mod for the game.

This is definitely the one to buy if you haven't bought UT2K4 yet. Unless you want all those video tutorials and the nice single DVD, then there's really no need to buy that edition right now. Maybe if you find it used, heh, but being a DVD set I would be cautious to buy that pre-owned from a store - even more online.

With the way things stand, the $40 price tag is a bit much for owners of the original, however it's fair for newcomers. Still, $40 for the game is a lot, but that's what happens when you have such a successful hit (in this day and age where a CD can cost $50 yet only took 50ยข to make...don't get me started).

I also read the bonus packs will be available for download for the original owners of UT2K4...however, I am unsure of what these 'packs' will contain. My advice? Hold off until it's ready to be released so you can find out what the real deal is.
