A tag is a little marker placed on models to provide a reference for attaching separate models to that model.

Creating one is as simple as making a single untextured polygon and giving it a 'tag_' prefix.

On a standard Q3 player model, there are at least 3 tags.

tag_torso - Placed on the legs model so the game knows where to attach the torso model.

tag_head - Placed on the torso model so the game knows where to attach the head model.

tag_weapon - Placed on one of the hands of the character to let the game know where to attach the weapon model.

The reason id Software originally made this 3 part body model set was so the torso and head could rotate independently of themselves and the legs to reflect the character looking around when the player moved their mouse.
Of course, that wouldn't have been necessary had they used skeletons for their models... :p

On a weapon model, that tag_flash bolts a model that's been textured with a flash briefly to it.  So when the player fires the weapon, u see a flash at the barrel.

But anyway, they're just so u can attach models to other models. :)  Things like the Hazard Team Helmet and Doctor's mobile emitter were attached using tags.

Hope that helped. :)

Very much it helps me to understand.
I will save this information for future use.
I suppose this becomes important if you make your own weapons or something like that.

Can these tags be used almost anywhere to attach anything to anything or are they pretty specific?

Sir Bors.

Sir_Bors,

these tags are defined in the q3a/ef code. Basically the code checks the model for one of these tags and then connects another model that also has a tag_ (f.i. a weapon) together. This allows the coder to use other tags to connect belts, backpacks, ... should he want to do so in a mod.
