Hi,
I have rented a server with uberservers. Its a 16 player server dedicated to DM. Its great, runs fine & i am very pleased as I haven't rented a server before. I would like to know what I can do with the settings to sort out the small amount of lag I sometimes get? The max rate is set at 10000 as default, is this correct or can I tweak it for better performance? Any advise would be great!  Laterzzzzzzz

hey - I have changed servers & now rent a server with Gameage online gaming. Its an 18 player DM server & its great. Thing is I still get lag from time to time? Ive been through the forums again & again looking for the best settings but without much joy. I read the post from montybass on maxrate which seems interesting. The maxrate is set by default at 10000 & the connection is 100 up, 100 down. What would be the best maxrate for the server? Also do hunkmegs play a part in all this? laterzzzzzz

The lag most likely come from packetloss and probably depends on quality of the network. Not to say that its your game server host, it can as well be your own ISPs network. For what I've learnt the only possible tweak is the sv_fps. Im not sure however if this only applies when the cpu usage is to high or if it has a general effect. (setting it to 15 instead of 20 = sv_fps 15 in config file)

Edit: I'm not sure about this - but if connecting to a rate that your connection acually cant handle, might cause you problems. I e 56k modem user should only connect to 2500 and not 10000. Anyone - correct me if I'm wrong!

I might be wrong with this, but setting your client rate should also dictate how the server communicates with that client up to what the max is set for the server itself...

So (enter the correct Rev here),, your 56K @ 2500  client = server to that client @ 2500.

Anyone?

No, I think its the ingame setting (ISP) that determines what rate you connect with. The servers sv_maxrate is merely the highest available rate that is permitted. In the console you can see clients connecting with higher rate, but it will still be sv_maxrate that sets the real limit.

My thought was this: If a 56k client set that he has T3 in the ingame settings (ISP). Will he connect with a rate of 10000 and then just get problems, or will it autoswitch to best suitable rate?

Killclub: Download Winmtr (http://winmtr.sourceforge.net/winmtr_bin.zip) and run it against the IP of the game servers. See if you get any packetloss and where you get it from. Remember that you need to see packetloss at the end as well, sometimes you get it at any router but not at the end - ignore that.
