I was wondering if there is a maximum number of maps that can be run on a linux dedicated server.  I searched for an answer so sorry if this has been asked.

i dnt think so, the only max i know of is the ammount that can be displayed in the client interface and even then the non displayed maps still work fine.

The only thing you start to run into is longer load times on map changes for the server. I generaly tell people to to just keep the files to a min that they need,, Esp of you are running a pure server with DL on.

Actually, I was just askin Wolfie about his server settings - I have about 200 maps on my server now, pure with dl enabled, and a lot of the maps which are NOT in the cycle seem to force-download to any client who does not have them.  Wolfie's server does not seem to have this problem - his maps download only as necessary for the current game.

So - he recommended that I remove from the server any of these "problem" maps - to clarify, these maps DO work, but the server forces clients to dl them even if they are not maps in the current mapcycle.

In conclusion, I'd have to say that I also do not know the maximum # of maps you can have on a server, but I'd recommend being a bit selective about WHICH maps you choose to put on the server.

PS:  Can anyone tell me why some maps do not show up in the client votelist?  I would have thought that the maplist would filter out maps of non-compatible gametype (dm, tdm, etc), and maybe it does - but there seems to be many dm maps which do not show up on the votelist (when my current gametype is dm).  Is this just an oversight of some mapdesigners, a game bug, or am I doing something wrong? (Most likely it's me...)  Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Thanks for the info.  I've learned the hard way that it is best to upload just a few maps at a time (without putting them on my client) then going in and seeing if downloading all maps is forced.  I was just wondering cause I was planning on symlinking a few game servers on a linux server for a lan party and wanted a large group of maps.  I wasn't sure if there was any limitations as my clan will tell you I'm usually a scrooge about loading too many maps on our clan server, LOL.
