Intel and AMD are just as good as eachother, when one takes a step into the lead, the other takes two to catch up, and get ahead.

Right now, I like the Athlon 64...

And because of this, it's we the consumers who benefit in the end with better products.  Do you really think we'd be at 3.2ghz by now if there wasn't this competition b/t the two?

No but atleast programmers would write more efficent code. I mean, back in '90 or so you need what a 486 to run Word Perfect, now you need 700mhz for Office and the sad part is, I can still only type 150wpm.

Agreed!  If only 1 company had all the market, they wouldn't put some much time/money to improve their products.  They would make a whole lot of money out of what they already have.  Besides, competion is good since it keeps the prices down for the average user.

Same thing with the graphic cards market actually.  That's why I'm glad ATI in neck to neck with Nvidia....

There's an old axiom in the computer world: "Intel giveth, Microsoft taketh away."  Meaning, the more processing power computers get, the more readily someone is going to take advantage/abuse it.

About the only time I'd really agree with TAK, but I really wish software companies would spend more time working on size and effeciency.

But I am quite happy that with the Athlon 64 mainstream computing is moving into the full 64-bit realm - at the very least it will make computationally intensive research much more affordable, which can only mean good things for the general population down the road.

Sounds like a certian software maker doesn't it.

Anyway, unless your using Linux, *BSD, Solaris there is no point of buying a AMD64 cpu right now, since your operating system can't support 64-bits.
