| Quote (esuyengh @ Oct. 29 2003, 7:11 pm) | I think the thread that was closed was one I started. I am a little miffed that it was closed because the problem raised is still not resolved and users were actively comparing experiences, which is helpful in user self-troubleshooting (which seems to be the only type of troubleshooting occuring, since Raven is ignoring us). I understand that there is a forum rule, but following the rule blindly without considering the nature of the post is just inane. I mean, I'm a law student, and even real rules are bent if the matter is relevant. Please don't consider this a flame Wolf because I understand that you are just doing your job as a moderator. But I am questioning the actual rule itself. Especially since it is an obscure (until it is made sticky) and nonstandard rule that is probably not found in any other forum. In reality what is the difference between 4 days and 7 days if the issue is still unresolved? Why put a statute of limitations on it so to speak?
And as to the Catalyst problem. Using 3.6 is probably the best for JA, but 3.6 does not run that well in some other games. I've been living using 3.8 despite the instability rumors and seem to be doing ok. The comment about OpenGL 1.04 incompatibility was really helpful, and I hope more like it come to help rectify the situation where those of us investing in nice equipment are getting some of the worst performance. |
the problem with waiving rules for certain threads is that it leaves the door open for abuse of the rule. whether or not a thread should be bumped would differ from one person to another.
tell you what. i'll compromise. i'll prune the thread in question of "detritus" and open it and then make it sticky as a tech support thread. BUT if it gets flooded by constant flaming etc then it's history |

Maybe you could add my information from above to that sticky as well? It does point to some really helpful info on this subject. |

EDIT
Sorry for any 'harsh' tone I had, since I didn't know about that rule and never saw that mentioned anywhere before. As was mentioned before, I had followed etiquette from other forums, which was to re-use an older thread to prevent the "use search dummy" responses.
/EDIT
I work overnight and just got onto the boards, so this explains my late reply.
My hardware can handle the power requirements and can run every other game I've thrown at it. Only Jedi Academy 'barfs' on me. JK2, Q3, Star Wars: Galaxies, Splinter Cell, NWN, C&C: Generals, and the JA demo all work flawlessly on my system. Only the full retail JA release has this issue for me.
I'll try some of the other tips and tricks to see what helps. As far as my system goes:
Shuttle SN45G nForce2 Ultra 400 XPC AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2x512 MB of Mushkin Level 1 PC3500 DDR 2x160 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 HDD TDK IndiDVD 440N burner ATi 9800 Pro 256
Running an Antec TruePower PSU instead of the stock PSU didn't help either. It's definitely not a power issue for me. Putting in a Ti4200 128 card and the game ran for hours. Put the ATi back in and it barfed. |

That suggests to me it's an ATI specific issue, which isn't unheard of. If one looks at the past Catalyst driver update lists at the ATI website, there's always certain games that ATI has problems with and has to release fixes for. Yet it's rarely the game developers fault in any of those situations. If it were truly something inherently broken in JA retail, then it would probably barf on the Ti4200 card as well. It totally sucks, I know... but it's not entirely surprising given the advanced nature of the 9800Pro 256 card, and ATI's track record. To they're credit though, they've always been pretty timely in the past with releasing updated drivers... keep an eye out on their website for sure. Maybe they would be willing to put you on an email list for notification when the updated drivers are released.
Nice system by the way...
