Where do you guys think Nvidia is heading in the 3D card wars in the next 6 months to a year? Will ATI totally destroy them, and if so is there any other company who could take their place?

From things I'm reading lately, it sounds like the Nvidia cards could be dead and buried - 3DFX-style, the way things are panning out.

Please discuss, and then write a 5000 word essay due on my desk by Thursday afternoon. :P

These days,  its either a nvidia or ati powered card. I can't really see nvidia going 3DFX way... ATI need some sort of competition!

ATI have been around since the beginning, so I guess they have the knowledge of survival... maybe nvidia will get a finger outta their a$s...

imo it all depends on how their next card goes on release and whether it is truley dx 9 compliant meaning it can run all the ps shaders etc at a playable level

i think they are finally waking up and seeing that they arent on top any more.  their next new gpu should be a good one as long as its not just a modified fx 5900 or whatever they called their last card

NVIDIA still has an overwhelming lead as far as market share in desktop graphics.  They have 75% of the professional graphics market, along with a good chunk of the mobile market as well.  Added to the contracts that they have with the government, their chipsets, which are doing very well, handheld graphics, etc., they aren't going anywhere.  3DFX had a big problem with the way the company was being run.  They would've went out of business regardless, it wasn't because the Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 came out late and were extreme letdowns.

I dont think Nvidia will be dead and burried any time soon personally. Yes they made some bad hardware design decisions with the FX line as it shows with current performance in DX 9 games compared to ATI's line of video cards of course. But I wouldnt count them out of the Video card market entirely just yet.

Also what do ya think about Vivendi universal/Valve's announcement on Half Life 2's 2003 launch date demise? As of now HL2's new release date is set for april 2004 OUCHY! :s6: Hopfully that will change to at least a december 2003 date instead perhaps in the near future. Oh well I wasnt to crazy about the first Half Life so that mabye why I'm not terribly eager to purchase HL2 I suppose heheee. :D

never seen that on my gf4 ti4600, also I think that the NV40 will give Nvidia a new lease on life and they quite simply can't die because of the fx line because for one the company is rather diverse and video cards are only part of what they make, and also ATI will not let them slip under as then they would be w/o much competition and the antitrust suits would start flying their way.

I'm sure they're researching like a m0f0 in the R&D department of NVidia, so they'll be on par with ATI in no time. At least thats what I hope for them.
