I'm looking toward a VERY powerful system, but am looking at some less than mainstream alternatives. Here's three of my bigger questions.

What's the best processor out there? The Pentium 4 3.1GhZ vs. Athlon 2?00... What would be the best availble for each?

How about Linux? Is it worth trying?

Should I go for broke with the Vid Card and get the Radeon Pro 9?00, or stick with a reliable, cheaper GeForce 4 ti4800?

Any other advise would be appreciated.

with linux... why not have a duell boot first... see how you like Linux...

but Windows is just THE OS for gaming... as Direct X and other apps are not avalable for Linux and WINE does #### up on a regular bassis

best advise i can give get loads of ram

1024 MB DDR should keep you going for a couple of years  :)

The AMD64 is coming september 23th, starting at 3200+ with 1meg L2 cache.  And Intel will release its Prescott processor real soon too.  I'd wait a couple of weeks if I were you.

I will get the AMD64 in december or january...

Right now you can get the AMD Opteron: 240, 242 and 244 (dual processor) or AMD Opteron: 140, 142 and 144 (single processor)

1. the P4 3.2 Ghz is the current mainstream champ but the upcoming AMD64 is gonna blow it out the water. I'd wait, and if ya got the $$$ get the highest clocked 64 that comes out at launch.

2. I wouldn't know

3. the Ti4800 is almost exactly the same as a 4600 only with 8x AGP so if youw ant to go that route, go for a 4600.
personally, i'd get a 9700 Pro (i've got one) its not as expensive as a 9800 pro, but gives really good performance and is cost effective. Its faster than a 9800 non pro and when you overclock it its smoking :D

4. Concerning memory, for now i'd get 512 megs and upgrade later, and its still unclear whether any of the first wave of amd64 mobos will support dual-DDR. If they do, and you got the $$$, get two 512 sticks.
Also, unless your going to be overlocking, pc2700 (DDR333) is faster and cheaper than pc3200. I regret getting 2700, since I oc and I can't pump up my fsb and get the memory to run in time with it, but if your not into ocing, 2700 is great.

5. Depending on what the AMD64 pulls in terms of wattage, i'd get either a 350 or 400 (or even higher) power supply (preferably a good brand, fortron, enermax are among the best) because the 9700 pro pulls more power than conventional vid cards.

6. Have fun :)

if its your first building experience, its gonna be 85 percent fun and 15 percent hard work/sweat/frustration, it was for me
:)

If it works well for what you need it for why change it?

My only advice is to remember to put the spacers between the case and the motherboard :)

Forgot them the first time I built a PC, all I got out of it was a faint buzz when I hit the power button :p
