Don't use a shim...shims are evil...EVIL!  They will fry processors(at least I think thats what fried it).

Anyway, wait, don't wait, I dont really know what to tell you.  Except get a Radeon 9800 Pro and an AMD(whether it be 64 or XP). :p

I got a stupid shim on my 9700 pro (all 9700 pros do)

it raises the heatsink, so ATi had to use extra thick crappy thermal interface material to get it to touch.
If ya remove the shim and apply thermal paste its supposed to lower yer temps like 10 degrees.

So yah,

Nah, unless you tried installing your HS with a sledhammer then maybe you'd crack it.
