Very, very interesting read at GamePC.  I don't see a lot of people migrating to this platform in the near future but I do think it'll be the norm in less than 5 years.

I also read, earlier this week, a preview of the AMD64.  It simply blew any Intel product out of the water.  The gain in performance for gaming was near 50% in comparaison with Intel's fastest chip.  Sadly, I don't remember where I read that article...

Can you install a 32-bit OS on a comp running an Athlon64?

Cause I don't want to have to wait for 64-bit drivers, but I would like that 50% performance gain :)

I think even if you could, it'd defeat the purpose.

I remember about 1 year before Windows XP came out there was talk about wether they should make WindowsXP 32bit 0r 64bit,of course you would need a 64bit CPU and probably a different motherboard yada....yada

its not so much a gain in performance.
it is a lack of 'performance hit' on the AMD64

these are quotes from this article

intel:
Quote
Itanium handles 32-bit software through emulation....From all indications, 32-bit performance is not anywhere near "full speed" on the Itanium.

amd:

AMD64. You can be running a 32-bit applications right alongside a new 64-bit application, both running at full speed with no slowdowns. Everything, such as games, graphics applications, programming utilities, will run as seamlessly in XP 64-bit edition as they do in today's 32-bit editions of XP.

both:

32-bit applications running on a 64-bit OS will see little to no performance benefit, and in some occasions, will see slight performance decreases.
