NOt just the US. Parts of Canada too. My uncle used to work in power, and, bealive it or not, all those cities are on the same power grid. It could just be a major outage.

My dad works at Virginia Power.  I'll ask him what he thinks when he gets home.

No one would get zaped when it goes on. I'm sure theres some kind of safety about that.

edit: Homeland security says "They arn't ruleing out anything," but it dosn't look like a terrorist attack. But ####, all of NYC? At least hospitals and stuff have backups.

If they're touching the line when it comes back on, they will.  Subway tracks aren't meant to be walked on.  Subsequently, unless they're really close to a station, they're stuck on the train.
(elevators too)

Yeah, I don't normally pay attention to news, but I was switching channels and saw HUGE crowds of people in some city, and I obviously had to watch to find out what was happening.

Jeez, hearing about all those people having to walk home when they would have taken the subway.  Made me think about how I go to and from college all the time.  I don't often have cash on me, or my parents work numbers, and I don't have a cell phone either.  If this happened in BC (luckily today I didn't go to school), I would be stranded somewhere downtown!  :s6:   I would have to take a bus that also takes me home, but it would take forever to get home that way.

Yikes.  I mean, I think power outages can be pretty cool and fun, because they are temporary (mostly blackouts I like) and pretty rare in my area.  But in those areas hit (I heard of New York and Ontario, what other places?), how long will that last, and this will really be like a survival mode for people, to see how long they can go without electricity.

WOW.

I lost power here. All of ontario lost power as far is I can tell. They are starting to get power back up to the smaller citys but its going to take longer for the large citys. Power here was down for almost 6 hours.
