the recomended defaults for sof2 are:
2500 - 33.3k
4500 - 56k
5000 - Isdn/cable (64k)

Found this on Quake3 Tweaks

RATE
The rate command specifies how much bandwidth you have available. The following is a quote from John Carmack (Id-Software):

"The most important one is 'rate', which is what the connection speed option in the menu sets.

We are fairly conservative with the values we set for the given modem speeds: 2500 for 28.8, 3000 for 33, and 3500 for 56k. You may actually be connecting faster than that, and modem compression may be buying you something, so you might get a better play experience by increasing the values slightly.

If you connect at 50000 bps, try a rate of 5000, etc., I err on the conservative side, because too low of a rate will only make the movement of other things in the world choppy, while too high of a rate can cause huge amounts of lag.

Note that the optimal rate will be somewhat lower than a rate for QW or Q2, because I now include the UDP packet header length in the bandwidth estimate."

This would seem to be counter intuitive to the statement that low rates cause the server to lag. I can however see that a wide range of rates might cause some delays and lag. It would be interesting to see if you ran the rates down but kept the same range 2500~5000 between all the users if it would fix the lag.

Wow, it's amazing how FAR from reality some documentation can be!

The lag IS already fixed.

i would not say thats far from reality, since carmack wrote the engion im sure he knows what hes talking about. The exact values wont apply anymore since the code will have been alterd slightly both throguth patches and modification by raven. Ignoring the values what he said is correct and relevent to sof2.

The bottom line for us is that we want to be able to set our own minimum rate. You CAN set the ping ranges for your server and we'd like to set rate as well.

As far as the lag issue: I gave you our findings, perform your own tests. It's easy as having several players set their rates incorrectly while yours is set proper and see what effect that has.

Again you CAN set ping ranges and we want to set minimum rate. We DO NOT support telephone modem users on our server (that's reflected in our maximum ping setting) so there is absolutely no reason for players to have available to them the RATE of telephone modem users.

That sounds fair enough Spike, don't it?

i missed out the last 4
9000 - Dsl
10000 - Cable
11000 - T1
20000 - Lan
since we were only descussing rates under 5000

My feelings exactly Spike. We don't support telephone modem users on our server and we want Raven to RE-ENABLE the "sv_minrate" command that THEY TURNED OFF!

It's ALREADY built into the game, turn it back on! ???

Hey Gibbed. You are talking on a similar subject that I brought up over a year ago and I got the same response that you are getting. I was shot to pieces and told that I did not know what I was talking about and that I was on a witch hunt. A few months after that Raven allowed Evenbalance to start kicking peeps for having rates that were set too low. Total vindication for me and the few that agreed.

I would welcome Raven allowing us admins to set the minrate ourselves. Sadly and for reasons known ONLY to Raven, they do not want us to have this.

Gibbed, if your tests are indeed true then perhaps contact the author of this program: http://www.planetsoldier.com/autokick and see if he can add the minimum rate check.

I've not tried this program but looks like a good idea to keep HPB's off your server.

I had a real quick look at that program Johnnie. If the author were to put in autokick options to enforce a minrate setting ... I am pretty d amn sure that a large number of servers would run it. It is a real pain in the ass to constantly have to do rate checks to sort out assholes who have not bothered to read up on how to setup thier SOF2 client settings.

An autokick would rock, especially since Raven have absolutley sucked in giving admins enough tools to admin thier own d amn servers efficiently.
