Hi guys, just read an interesting news article in my local newspaper...
It basically asks: Where is the patriotism and pride in English culture?
When i have been to Wales, there are flags everywhere! In little villages, in social areas and (of course) in tourism areas.
Americans, also. They are mad on there patriotism - you hear and American singing "America The Beautiful" and they are usually singing with all there passion! And school kids are pledging their allegiance to the flag all the time.
But English people? We struggle to say "God Save The Queen!" - that's if it isnt at the beginning of a Footie match.
English people are mega patriotic when it comes to Football, but it dies after we get KO'd... I mean i LOVE football as much as my Girlfriend - but why can't we be proud of our heritage and country all the time?
Even our friends in the USA are proud of the English history, and sometimes even moreso than the English themselves!
I am patriotic, I am proud of my country!
WITHOUT FLAMING, please could EVERYONE (inc. non-English) explain why they love their country and what the patriotism is like in their country.
Any thoughts are welcome,
Worf55
(and i hope i havent offended my fellow countrymen, that was the very last thing on my mind!) |

I have no clue, I think it might have something to do with culture more then anything else. Singing "God Bless America" before almost every public event is natural and just how things work I guess. but until I started talking to flix and sheep I thought this was sort of a international thing. But when I was in London I saw flags almost everywhere. btw, when it comes to saying the pledge everyday at school. That happens a bit less near the high school age. BUt we all still stand for it. But if you got some homework that is due next period and you are trying to get it done, you are going to do it. |

I love America because my ancestors who built this country worked hard, nad fought to preserve my freedom. I owe this country everything short of my life.
When we gained our independance from england, Democracy was something unheard of. To make all men equal, and to make each citizen important was an amazing feat to accomplish. The long road to democracy waws untreaded before, but we treaded the path to greatness.
In America anyone can work hard to do what you want. It might be harder for some, it might be the silver spoon for others, but nothing holds back hard work and effort.
When I see old glory flying, it's more than a sybol of my country, it is a PART of my country. A part of Hard Work, and a part of Making yourself something great. It symoblizes centuries of hard work, and millions of lives. I see everyone from the lowly farmer who put food on my table, to the soldier who dies defending everything I hold dear. It means the world to me. |

Canadians normally aren't terribly patriotic. Canadian pride rests on just a few pillars: - decent beer (eg, not American ) - quality hockey - "universal" health care - great scenery - being "not American" and "not European", but socially a bit of both Not too much overt patriotism except on "Canada Day" (July 1). That's aboot it, eh? |

After Sept. 11 I saw all types of bumper stickers all with patriotic slogans and I saw a sea of american flags. sometimes 3 to a car. Like the more flags the more patriotic you are and I see the most flags on japanese and korian owned cars. Today there aren't hardly any flags and the flags I do see say Yankies or Mets or some sports team. I was watching some guy put on a Mets flag today (he just happened to be japanese. His nationality is not the point) |

Venture a little out of London and you'll seldom see flags everywhere, unfortunatly!...
Anyway, thanks guys for your views... keep em rolling in! |
