Well, pay to play is not going to be going anywhere.
Its viable and profitable for companies to operate in this capacity. And if you think about it you are getting quite a bit of bang for your buck. $13 per month breaks down to .43 cents per day. So for less then the price of a coke from a vending machine you get access to a well maintained server that has several thousand other players playing on it. How exactly is that a bad deal? Not to mention the fact that the games are constantly updated with patches to fix issues as well as add content. So instead of the 2 to 4 patches that you might get with a regular non pay to play game, you are looking at at least monthly patches/updates.
####, If you don't eat at McDonalds twice in a month's time you have your fee covered. Hmm, what else is there... You could go to a movie (alone) and get a snack and a drink and have 2 hours of entertainment, or for the same price, you can get almost 24/7 access to a game for a full 30 days.
Its all about perspective.
Look at all the games that appear to be doing just fine using a pay to play model. Ultima Online, EverQuest, Dark Age of Camelot, Anarchy Online, EVE, Earth and Beyond, Shadow Bane...
Then there are the games that are coming out that will be pay to play... Worlds of Warcraft, Starwars Galaxies, EverQuest 2, |

whoa, that's a huge list of games i'll never play!
hrm, a clan server for lets say 80 a month. how many in a clan? more than 8 i bet. so lets say 6 ppl pitch 10 each, i pitch nothing (because we all know, i pay with my ping lol) and the admin pays 20. it works out to be a whole lot cheaper...
oh, and all you people who say your addicted to this game....what happens when your free trial is up? are you really going to send $15 a month (or whatever it is) once you realize that the game is mind numbing and repetitive? |

LoL
Name any other company that has had time to get 2 or more, MMO games out.
SOE has gotten EQ and Planetside out, and Microsoft has gotten Asheron's Call and AC2 out. Other then that, there are no other companies that spring to mind that have had 2 releases in that genre.
Granted, Planetside is the first FPS to be a MMO type title that is pay to play. But I certianly don't think it will be the last. |
