I got a copy of Hexen late last year when my cousin returned from the US with a Hexen CD and a JK2 CD. Unfortunately I have little time to go through such an old game as Hexen. I checked its bestiary and emailed Kenn to get his confirmation that the word Hexen means "witches". Weird that there seems no witches in the game. All monsters are male there. As for the three main characters, none of them is a female either.

"Hexen" is witches (in plural and in... I believe in the nominative case among others) in German, but I don't think that was what Raven was thinking about when they coined that name. "Hex" can also be a word in English which iirc means to "do magic stuff" and they coined a weird, mysterious-sounding word from that.
