Hello!

Im asking for your help again guys! (Sorry!)...

Problem 1:
  • I cannot get into WindowsUpdate, it keeps saying:
    Quote

Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer.

You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use Windows Update.

But I am running a Windows operating system! Im running a non-dodgy, perfectly legal, not damaged version of 98SE! HELP!

    :(

    -----------
    Problem 2:

  • When i try to access some websites that requires I.E4/5+ it doesn't allow me in, but i have I.E6!

    Please help me...

    Thanks for any help!,

When did it last work that you recall?  What have you done since that may have broken it?  (i.e. upgraded something)

For XP Pro, this is where the link goes, try this directly:

    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Make sure the Help / About Internet Explorer says you are using 6.x

If all that fails, you might want to try to re-download, re-install IE (make sure you download the installer prior to un-installing).

I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago.  The % went real fast and said no updates available + something else I don't recall.  Well, it was because my system date was about 2 years behind, like 2001 instead of 2003.  You may want to check it.

The only things i have done as of late are:
  • Virus scan
  • Disk Defrag
  • Reg clean-up
  • Deleted most multimedia stuff, like gaming and images...

Basically had a good clean of my system, but the problem was before i did this...

[edit= WOW... What spike said about sending made me think it was a firewall problem, so i just disabled it and WindowsUpdate now works!]

    Thanks guys!,

IIRC microsoft are stopping supporting 98
they may have already done so, perhaps this is the problem

Worf good to see you got past it, I had that happen on ms sites (though the hotmail one allowed you to ignore it) with 98SE + NIS combo as it blocked the site from gathering data about OS & Browser

Actually it goes as this for Win 98 (SE as well):

Entering Non-Supported phase (effective date): January 16, 2004

End of Life (effective date after end of online self-help support): January 16, 2005

Funny thing is that Windows ME end of line comes BEFORE 98... lol!
