yep, its mainly C and C++ for preformance and cross platform compatibility.

the gametype code avalible for modding for sof2(q3 engion) is c code.

I started with visual basic to learn programming.... it does give you the basic idea of programming concepts but when we moved on to java I had to start all over with a lot of things, for example the syntax.

The Quake 3 engine, Doom 3 and most engines written by Id are in C. C, or C++ is probably what you want to learn - although there are a lot of game companies out there, especially in Asia using many different languages.... even Javascript! :)

I have a question, is there a difference between Java and Javascript? Do you compile a Java program to an executable? Or do you need to be running some sort of java interpreter, ie a web browser? I've never quite got the whole java thing, what's so good about it?

java and javascript are very different, javascript is to java what vbscript is to vb  :p its a very cutdown version ment for use in browsers.

java however is compiled, but its not compiled to an executable, but to bytecode an inbetween language that can be run on the Java virtual machine (JVM).

the idea of the jvm is so it can be implemented on any platform and makes the bytecode corssplatform compatible assuming there is a jvm for that platform, good in "Therory"

compiled java classes can be used in web pages as applets hence why java and javascript get confused.

IMHO the problems with java incudel:
compatibility problems with older code and new JVM's
hard to run java programs (jar files and jre solve this to an extent, but its still not as easy as double clicking)
interface looks horrible :P

Microsofts .NET series of languages are very simalar in theory, they compile to an inbetween format and can be run on any platform with the aproperate VM only problem microsoft is not making the VM for other platforms :(

Thanks spike! :) That's about what I thought. I use some javascript on my web page but only serve it up to internet explorer browsers because I just cbf learning all the ins and outs of all the different browsers and versions. wish they could all just get along  :s9:
