Raven

I'm a full time (8 hour a day) Quake 3 player.
And I cant help thinking you'll lose strafe jumping in Quake 4.
The one and only reason millions of people still play Quake 3 and NOT ut2k3 or some other crap game is cause of the ability to strafe... Decide wether to speed up or not... Having something extra to do while moving from one place to another...
Also the ability to chance EVERYTHING... picmip - enemymodel (osp mostly)

Now I dont say I know more of making games then you people... but it's just a suggestion from my point.
My knees start shaking and my head turns red just thinking about the possibility of losing strafejumping...
PLEASE... I beg you... Me and thousands of other quakers would give their LEGS for strafejumping...

As for me... I pray to the Quake God he brings this to a great end and gives us Quakers all a great game to enjoy for many more years

Raven I thank your for even trying to give us a possibility to not eat and sleep for 24 hours while sitting 3 inches from our screen with eyes that make basketballs look like nothing

Good Luck

Jurry

Personally, before making any more requests on Quake IV, I'd like to know just... WTF RAVEN'S BEEN DOING ON IT FOR THE PAST YEAR!!! Suddenly they've done 60% of Jedi Academy? Where'd thát come from, where's Quake IV!?  :s9:

I'm under the impression that strafe jumping is a physics bug. Why do a programmer intentionally leave a bug in? If you need bug exploitation to make a game fun then it must be a very basic game. I'm sure Raven will make an interesting and fun game that holds up to the test of time, with complex features for hardcore players. They don't need to intentionally add stupid physics just to please fans of a previous game. People who want strafe jumping should be able to add the code with a Mod, just like some Mods have done for SoF2.

(The skill in an action FPS is in the shooting, and the gamers reactions. If they want a game that requires skill and practice they should make the shooting more complex. None of the spammy, random, recoiless shooting of normal action FPS.)

I actually didn't learn strafe jumping until Q3-Team Arena came out... thats when things really changed and I went from a "meh" player to a very competitive player. I also would really like to see this implemented in Quake 4. I also liked how they kept the strafe jump in the Urban Terror mod for Quake 3, I found it was one of the several things that made Urban Terror a better game than SoF2.

The game is going to be more single player focused than Q3.  It will still have multiplayer elements but dont expect the same game as Q3.

This happened on the UT forums too, any time anything was changed they went insane, basically all they wanted was UT with better graphics.  ITS A DIFFERENT GAME!  It will be different and many of the features will be different.  We just have to wait and bask in its glory on release.

Duh... That much I had figured out a couple years back. :) But that doesn't change the fact I didn't expect a new Jedi Knight game from Raven, as I thought that after SOF2/JK2 the main job would've been Quake IV.

Strafejumping was a bug in Q2... but when ID noticed players liked it... they did it in Q3 on purpose...
As for the single player based thing... I dont care... single player games can still be fun multiplayer

ITS A SEQUEL!!!!

All the SP people seem to want it to be like Q2, the MP fans want it to be Q3 style, I just don't see why both cannot be satisfied in one game (or at least the SP fans want to distance the game from that! :()

Yay! Someone who respects the facts that some gamers like sp! :p
Yeah, you got a point. I don't see a reason to leave a popular feature out of a franchise - even if it started as a bug.
Quake 4 is supposed to take the Quake franchise a step further, not change it into something totally different (well, it can add new things of course).
That's the deal with most sequels: you try to improve on a popular game, which means keeping it true to the original, while introducing cool new things.

If you want mp games to develop, why don't you sit back and wait for Nerve's as of yet undisclosed mp-only game? I'm sure it will be vastly different from any Quake game. But as far as Quake IV goes, it needs to maintain what made the other Quake's popular.
Having said that, I'm also quite sure it'll be possible for Quake 4 to have nice multiplayer, but it won't be the main focus of the game, which means that Raven won't do anything revolutionary in terms of netcode and mp gameplay. But if you're lucky, it'll end up being like Quake 3 Arena (reusing the Q3A's superb netcode), but with different weapons and maybe with better physics in terms of hit detection and death animations.

And calm down, just because Raven hasn't released anything apart from a concept sketch and the info that it will be sp based, returning to the Stroggie universe doesn't mean that Quake IV isn't progressing - just look at HL2: it has only just been announced and they have only released like one legal screenshot, but they've been working on it for years and it is slated for a Sept. 2003 release.
Though I admit, it'd be nice to see a wee bit of QIV info at E3 or Quakecon.  :D
