I have Broadband cable internet (2MB/sec download), and yet I still seem to experience some "sluggishness" at times in the game. I understand that lagging can be a result of the server side, but I would like to know what the best settings are on my end. What fps should I use? what can I do on my side to provide the smoothest results?

I'm not looking for the configurations for my specific hardware, but rather for the average multiplayer gamer, using high speed internet.

On a side note, are there known processes that should be killed on the average users PC, to help increase the rate of connection?

Hope that was clear, it didn't seem too clear when I wrote it...  :s8:

One thing you want to check is your rate setting (options --> network settings --> rate). By default SOF2 installs to a 33.6 modem setting. This gives the impression of lag and you will warp all over the place. Set it to cable and you may notice an immediate improvement. Also, have you tried a few servers? Do they all lag?

COBRAderra, thanks for the response...

I believe I've done that, although I'm at work now, and it's been awhile. I'll verify when I get home, though I'm pretty positive.

This is something I've noticed on most servers I'm on. Especially since I started playing again recently. I'll have someone in my sites, I'll start blasting, when suddenly their movements become "jumpy". I'm not talking about "bunny hopping", but like a cartoon that's missing a few sheets. Don't know how clear that was... It's nothing like when I use to have 56k dialup, and for the most part everything goes pretty well. It just seems like whenever I'm in combat things get a little screwy.

I've also noticed that there's times when my ping is the highest one (100-200) while everyone else is 90 or less. Not sure how the ping is configured...

Anyway, I'm not sure if I'm missing some settings within the game itself (like the fps, what's the best rate for my connection?).

Thanks again!

Figured I'd go ahead and post my PC config, although I'd rather keep it to general settings, that way it's easier for others to benefit from the post, and I don't really want to get into getting newer graphic cards and such...

Gateway
P3 866 Mhz
512 MB RAM
Nvidia Graphics Card
Microsoft XP Professional

cl_maxpackets

and I find that setting snaps to 50 (60 on non-pb servers) gives me the least lag with a 1.5mbit/256k cable.

You are joining servers you ping lowest in the game browser right? Also have you tried playing early in the morning (The AM hours ) just to see if your ping is any better then?

Beefy: Most servers cap their snaps at 40 anyway to save bandwidth.

You say that you lag more in battles, this might be network lag due to more data having to be sent do to the shots fired, but it also might be FPS 'lag'. What are the specs on your system ? Does the game seem smooth most of the time?
