anybody have any ideas how the colombia single player scritpting was done, where you did the missions with the captain and other soliders col6/7 ect ?

The brunt of the work is done by the AI (lich), the only thing that is "scripted" is the points at which they wait for the player (e.g. to clear out a building).  Take a look at SET_GOAL and SET_AREAGOAL.  If you give a marine with a rank of sergeant the GOAL "HoldArea" he will instruct his marines to move to this named areapoint.  From that point there is a goal in the AI system and it handles getting around obstacles, etc... this way it's fluid and not staticly scripted.
