my roomie and i want to start our own server. here is what we currently have:

- he works for the local radio station and they have a T1 connection, so we can use that.

- a fair amount of $$$ to purchase components

- extensive experience of building/assembling computers

- NO knowledge of how to run a server

please post your ideas on what we can do to create a great server (hardware/software/etc.)
also, i have heard of people remotely accessing a server to help people set up the game. if anyone is willing to do this, i would truly appreciate it

p.s. i am stepping into uncharted territory for myself. +set sv_pure 1, chmod +x sof2, and the likes leave me with a headache. i will probably need to become more familiar with this type of knowledge, but my mind is currently busy trying to master the finance concentration so i can graduate with some decent grades and hopefully wreak havoc with my intermarket arbitrage and business valuation skillz!  

If you are or have access to a windows machine with SOF II installed you might want to have a play with SOF2 Runner. This program was designed to make server setup as simple as possible. There is a comprehensive help file with the program and the interface should be easy enough to understand.

If you are going to run a Linux server you can export all the files you need from SOF2 Runner and copy them to your Linux server and off you go...

as far as OS goes, which one would you recommend?
processor wise, what type/speed would you suggest?
same goes for ram, HDD...
i would like to be able to support at least 16 people.

JUst get any 1Ghz class machine or better.
100mbit NIC
512MB Ram will be more than enough. 256 will do nicely.

Choose the OS you are most comfortable with.
A T1 will barely notice a 16 player game....
