I suspect Quake4 will have a good multiplayer. And I think Doom3 will have a better then expected multiplayer, but not as good as Q4. Matt Morton, Activision Producer, said this in reference to the Doom3 engine being bad for multiplayer: | Quote (Matt Morton @ Activision) | In all my days working here at Activision, I have never seen a developer "drop my jaw to the floor" as often as Raven does. i consider myself INCREDIBLY fortunate to have been invloved with them on some great projects.
If there is one thing I can say about Raven, it is "Prepare to be amazed". They are the miracle workers EVERY publisher wishes they have... we are just lucky enough to actually have them!
|
Jick Johnson, Lead Quake4 Programmer, said this about Punkbuster in Quake4:
| Quote (rickmus @ Raven Software) | Depends upon our evaluation on how effective PB was with SoF2.
|
Now why would you but PB in a singleplayer game? Or an LAN only, 4 player max, multiplayer game?
So I would say Q4 will definently have MP, and it may be a very good MP.

about the multiplayer... John Carmack evalute that the engine of Doom3 will be able to support around only 4 players on the multiplayer... i hope he is joking.... because Quake4 use the engine of Doom3.... Raven can modify the engine but... there is probably a limit. However, Ravensoftware is a great company they know what they do ( i hope ) |

| Quote (Andrax @ Mar. 18 2003, 6:52 pm) | Any shooter that doesnt have a Multi Player aspect should not even be released.
Single player shooter games are ok for about 7 days, then you move to MP, or you shelve the game.
I wouldn't care if all shooters came out in the future with NO single player aspect at all. Multiplayer Play online is what keeps games alive. |
Single player shooters are ok for only 7 days? My friend, if that's your honest sentiment, then I'm afraid that you do not know how to enjoy a good sp experience.
I still play Doom regularly, and that's only the SP - I rarely ever touch MP anymore and I also play RtCW SP quite often.
In other words: I do not agree with you that sp is redundant, in fact, it is my own opinion that SP owns MP anytime as there is absolutely no immersion factor in mp - mp is mostly about fast reactions and being better than anyone else which does not appeal to me very much.
Sometimes I want to relax and I fire up an easy map in an sp game just to get the satisfaction from killing some easy enemies - if I want a challenge, I just download a custom map that someone made really wicked and hard.
Of course, it's a matter of opinion and I respect that you prefer MP - all I'm saying is that I'm pretty tired of hearing stuff like "SP sucks! Leave it out!", because there ARE people (myself included) who appreciate a good sp game.
The other day I saw on another forum, that SP games are actually better for sales than MP games, because they still enjoy a quite large following, plus, they do not require maintenance of servers like mp games do, so once you've released an sp game, you can forget about it.
Quake 4 will be SP - that means that the target audience consists of people like me. They could make a Quake 5 for guys like you, though my personal opinion is that there's already Q3A for guys like you - a new MP only game would only be Q3A with better graphics anyway, so why want an update? |
